He was an important politician and wrote Utopia which described an ideal society.T: Good. S
5、ir Thomas More was Henry VIII of Englands chancellor between 1529 and 1532. He was executed by Henry for his opposition to the break with the Roman Catholic Church. Utopia was written by Sir Thomas More in 1516. It reflects many contemporary attitudes (e.g. the subsidiary place of women), but its em
6、phasis on democracy and egalitarianism was quite revolutionary. Deal with Exercise 1. It will help students prepare for listening.T: Look at the picture of the ideal society of Utopia on Page 36. What can we learn about Utopia from the picture?S1: We can see that everybody wears the same kind of clo

Now work in pairs guessing the answers to the questions in Exercise 1.Students think over the questions for two minutes.Then deal with Exercise 2.T: Well. Next, lets listen to
8、Sir Thomas Mores story about Utopia.Play the cassette twice for students to listen to and check their answers to Exercise 1.Step II Listen to learnDeal with Exercise 3Before playing the cassette, ask students to look through the questions in Exercise 3 on Page 36 first. Then, play the cassette and a
9、sk students to answer the questions. For the first time, the students just listen, and for the second time, get them listen and write short answers to the questions. Next, students work in pairs comparing their answers. Lastly, check answers with the whole class by pausing the cassette at certain pa
10、ragraphs or sentences.T: Before listening, read the questions first, while reading, I do hope you can underline the key words in each question and know exactly what the question is. As usual for the first time, you just listen, and for the second time, write short answers to the questions.Then check
11、 the answers. Deal with Ex 4 and Ex 5T: So far you have already known about Utopia by listening. Would you like to live in Mores Utopia? Why or why not? Now, listen to the tape again and write down two things you would like about Utopia and two things you would hate. Fill in the form in Exercise 4.
12、Play the cassette again for students to listen for things they would like and things they would hate. Then students exchange ideas in pairs and discuss whether they would like to live in Mores Utopia and give reasons for and against living there. A sample of discussion: S1: I would like to live in M
13、ores Utopia. Then I can do what I want to do if I dont go against the law. I can play freely. I neednt get up early if I dont want to. I neednt worry about what to eat tomorrow, what to wear tomorrow and so on.S2: I dont like it, because I like fashion and changes.S3: I dont like it, either. I think

So much for the discussion.Step III Listening Strategies: Understanding Cultural ReferencesThe listening strategies will help stu
15、dents build listening skills and get thoroughly prepared. Before listening to the conversation, ask students to read and discuss listening strategies on Page 36. From the listening strategies, students will learn how to deal with cultural references.T: Look at the things in Exercise 6. What do they
16、refer to? Can you guess? Ss: T: Actually, these things all have cultural references that we may not be familiar with. Then how to know their references? Here is a strategy for you LISTENING STRATEGIES. Read it please. Then let students listen to the conversation in Exercise 6 and guess the cultural
17、references of the things. Check the answers. Ask students to report back their guesses to the class and say what clues in the context helped them guess the cultural references of the words.Step IV Function File Deal with Exercise 7Give students time to read the Function File and guess the missing wo
18、rds. Draw their attention to the two sorts of suggestions, tentative and stronger. Play the recording for students to complete the gaps and see if their guesses are correct.
