21、中的每个单词都与它前后的词语或句子甚至段落有着互相制约的关系。我们可以利用语境或单词本身的结构特点来推测、判断某些生词的词义。实战演习技巧 1 通过定义猜测词义如果某个生词是由句子或段落来解释它的定义,理解句子或段落本身就是推断词义。如:Anthropology is the scientific study of people, society, and culture.由定义可知,anthropology 就是“研究人类、社会及文化的科学” ,即“人类学” 。解释定义的句子的谓语动词多为:be, mean, deal with, be considered to be, refer to,

22、 be called, be known as, define, represent 等。技巧 2 根据对比关系猜测词义如果一个句子或段落中,有对两个事物或现象进行对比的描述,我们可以根据生词的反义词猜测其词义。如:Andrew is one of the most supercilious men I know. His brother, in contrast, is quite modest.上句中的 supercilious 对我们来说是个生词,但是短语 in contrast“与此相反”可以提示我们 supercilious 和后面的单词 modest“谦虚的”是对比关系。这样我们便

23、能猜测出supercilious 意为“目空一切的,傲慢的” 。表示对比关系的单词和短语主要有:unlike,not ,but ,however,while, despite,in spite of,in contrast 等。技巧 3 根据同义词之间的替代关系猜测词义在句子或段落中,我们可以结合语境利用熟悉的词语猜测生词词义。如:Doctors believe that smoking cigarettes is detrimental to your health. They also regard drinking as harmful.上句中的 detrimental 是个生词,但根据

24、后文所提到的“also”和“harmful”可知detrimental 与 harmful 是同义词,我们就可以推测出它的意思是“不利的,有害的” 。技巧 4 根据词缀猜测词义我们还可以根据构词方面的知识,如前缀或后缀猜测词义。如:What an extraordinary response it was!根据词根 ordinary“普通的” ,结合前缀 extra-“超出;以外的” , 我们可以推测出extraordinary 的词义为“特别的;非凡的” 。常见的前缀有:anti- 反抗;auto-自动;自己;co-, com-, con-共同;di-, dis-否定;相反;extra- 超出;以外的;fore-预先;在之前的;il-, im-, in-, ir-否定;re-再;重新。常见的后缀有:-able 能的;-er, -or 表人,物;-ful 充满的;具有性质的;-like 像 的;-ship 表示情况、状态、身份。
