1Module 4 CarnivalⅠ. (2017 山东枣庄 18 中 4 月模拟,A)There are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. The origins of most of the days are unknown. They were certainly not created by individual people. Other days, however, especially those celebrated in western countries, often owe their origins to a particular person. One of the most popular of these, even though it is fairly recent, is Mother’s Day. Mothers have always been highly regarded in all cultures. The ancient Romans had a festival known as Hilaria, during which children took presents to the temple of the “Mother of the Gods”. The Christian Church adopted this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, over the years this custom was gradually forgotten and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century. Born in 1864 in Virginia, USA, Anna Jarvis was a school teacher and believed children should show gratitude to their mothers for all their love and care. Encouraged by a friend, she wrote to thousands of important people—politicians, churchmen, doctors, city officials—and asked them to support her idea: a special day of the year for thanking mothers. In 1910 the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mother’s Day into the state. The date chosen was May 10—the second Sunday in May, which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis’s mother had died. In 1914 2President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mother’s Day throughout the United States. Soon there was a Mother’s Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world. Anna Jarvis, a sad and disillusioned(失望的) woman, died in 1948. The custom she had worked so hard to establish and which had become almost universal had lost its original purpose. It had been taken over by business. Like Christmas, the giving of presents and the sending of cards had become a multi-million-dollar industry. 1.The story is about . When you’re walking home from work, don’t need your head-phones making loud noises in your ears. There is a much greater place to create positive emotions that will make us happier and much more fulfilled. Those emotions are within us, and by blocking these feelings with all of our latest technologies, we may be harming ourselves. 4 We need to take back control of our minds and stop compulsively checking our emails, Facebook updates, and text messages. I think we can live a happier life if we pay more attention to ourselves and the people we are speaking with. 5 Think about what parents are doing to children’s emotional well-being when they focus on their cell phones rather than their children. If you are playing with your children in the park, be totally attentive to what they are doing. If you are at a business meeting and someone is speaking, listen to everything they say. A.Your cell phone is not part of your body. B.Human beings are glued to their cell phones. C.Cell phones have brought great convenience to us. D.People addicted to cell phones are even not aware of their safety. In Simon’s case, the grades were awfully low. He 4couldn’t read his own handwriting. 2 he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his 3 . So when Simon’s mother entered the room, my palms(手掌心)were sweating. I was completely 4 for her kisses on both my cheeks. “I came to thank you,” she said, surprising me beyond speech. 5 me, Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he 6 me, he had begun to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he had 7 spent an afternoon at a friend’s house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the 8 I had nurtured(培养)in her son. She kissed me again and left. I sat, stunned(惊呆), for about half an hour, 9 what had just happened. How did I make such a life-changing difference to that boy without 10 knowing it? What I finally came to 11 was one day, several months before, when some students were 12 reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke 13 , and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon’s the expert on this. He is the 14 one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the 15 of the room.” That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention, 16 more, and became happy. And it was all because he 17 to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed 18 was the one who took the last seat that day. It taught me the most 19 lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I’m thankful that it came 20 and positively. It had been taken over by business.become a multi-million-dollar industry. They may not know using their cell phones may put themselves or their loved ones in danger. At least 200,000 car accidents were caused by texting messages. A survey done by the Pew Institute suggested that Americans in the age ranging from 18 to 29 years old send 88 text messages a day. 4.F 前句中的 by blocking these feelings with all of our latest technologies, we may be harming ourselves 告诉我们使用手机太多会伤害我们自己,比如引起忧郁和焦虑,故选 F。 15.C 根据 some students were giving reports in the front of the class 可知, 老师是要最后一排的同学也能听见。16.A 根据 sat up straighter, paid more attention 和 became happy 可知都是正面词汇, 以表示 Simon 的好的转变, 所以可判断选 A。 intend to do 打算做,想做;pretend to do 假装做;refuse to do 拒绝做;happen to 恰巧。 Simon’s the expert on this 可知这是一种表扬。 Carnival, which comes from two Latin words,1.
