When she caught up with them, she saw that they had sat down and were going through the contents of the bag, s

9、wspaper and it contained half the money he had lost, together with a note which said: A thief, yes, but only 5o per cent a thief! Two months later, some more money was sent to Sam with another note: Only 25 per cent a thief now! In time, all Sams money was paid back in this way. The last note said:

Many villagers believe that the tree has already claimed a number of victims. The vicar has been asked to have the tree cut down,
13、but so far he has refused. He has pointed out that the tree is a useful source of income as tourists have been coming from all parts of the country to see it. In spite of all that has been said, the tourists-have been picking leaves and cutting their names on the tree-trunk. So far, not one of them
