In time immemorial the nomadic tribes, who wielded a bow and arrow and dwelle

7、d within walls crafted of felt, were all one family of Turkic people. Modern Turkic people - the Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Tatars, Turks, Yakut, Kyrgyz and many others live today in Asia and Europe. The history of the Turkic people is like a river which springs from a small brook then becomes fast and free-f

8、lowing, at times narrowing and even disappearing into the sands, only to reappear as it overflows the great steppe. The ancient Turkic people were warlike and daring. They spent their lives in battle so brutal they turned the waters of the rivers as red as vermillion with blood. Arrows flew in such

9、multitude that the sky resembled a blanket of eagles feathers. The Turkic people created vast empires stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Danube, from the Taiga forests of Siberia to the jungles of Hindustan. According to wise men from the East the Prophet (May Allah bless him and send him peac

10、e!) said: “Do not provoke the Turkic people until the Turkic people provoke you”. Years went by and turned into centuries. Other peoples came to the boundless steppes of Eurasia, and with them came their gods. For a long time the Turkic people resisted any foreign influence. They told those who prea

11、ched Islam: “We are neither potters, nor craftsmen, nor merchants. We are warriors. And that is why we can-not believe in your god.” Tonyukok the Great told those who wanted to build Buddhist and Dao temples in the steppe: “These two religions weaken a mans sense of power and domination - they will

They started beli

20、eving in new gods and forgetting their great past.This is the story of how our ancestors forgot their legends. In ages gone by Tengri the Great taught the Turkic people how to write, and he told them: “A great and wise people will descend from you - scribes and prophets, kings and khans* (page 118)

21、(rulers).” Tengris covenants were set down in special books written in runes, big and plain as the sun. Our ancestors kept them in leather bags under gold locks. Only during the greatest celebrations would the elders open them and read to the people the wise words of Tengri and of their history. Onc

22、e our ancestors were wandering through a wide valley. It had been rain-ing for days and the furious rivers had swelled up and overflowed towards the caravan. There was so much water, it was so high that it reached the backs of the pack-horses and filled the bags. The books got soaked and the leaves

23、were stuck together. The elders hung the books on a tree to dry the white pages. Soon the tired aksakals* (page 118), or elders, fell asleep, whereupon a white cow wandered by and chewed up the books. Of course, this is only a legend. But the great history of the warlike Turkic Khaganats* (page 118)

24、, or states, has been lost in the mists of time and the Turkic people have forgotten their runes. These legends were passed down from generation to generation by story-tellers and elders. But the memory of man is unreliable. Very few of these old stories have reached us, and these I will try to weave into one tapestry. Will it be as rich and colourful as in times gone by? Only
