Inspiration Brief introduction Tu Youyou, born in 1930 in Ningbo, has been a pharmacologist at the China Academy of Chinese Medicine Science since 1965, engaging in research of the combination of TCM and WM. TCM: traditional Chin

2、ese medicine WM : western medicine Her discovery of artemisinin and its treatment of malaria is regarded as a significant breakthrough of tropical medicine in the 20th century and health improvement for people of tropical developing countries in South Asia, Africa, and South America. For her work, T

3、u received the 2011 Lasker Award in clinical medicine and the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine . In 11 December(Beijing Time), Tu Youyou received her 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in Sweden. Tu is the first Chinese Nobel laureate in physiology or medicine and the first citizen

4、 of the Peoples Republic of China to receive the Nobel Prize in natural sciences. “The Professor of Three Nos ” : no postgraduate degree , no study or research experience abroad , not a member of any Chinese national academies .Malaria research - artemisinin Artemisinin, a drug that has significantl

5、y reduced the death rate of malaria patients, and saved millions of lives across the globe, especially in the developing country. Tu started her malaria research in China when the Cultural Revolution was in progress. In early 1969, Tu was appointed as the head of the project, named Project 523 resea

6、rch group at her institute. She and her colleagues experimented with 380 extracts in 2,000 candidate recipes before they finally succeeded. In 1971, Tu was inspired by many ancient classic works on TCM. Using a pioneering low-temperature method, Tu and her team first extracted artemisinin from a swe

7、et wormwood plant(青蒿 ). For the sake of drug safety, she had personally taking tests, which led to her liver poisoning, but she still kept on working, regardless of picking samples in the wild, or in the indoor experiment study.Inspiration Achieving modernization of TCM through science and technolog

Tus success shows that TCM has to embrace modern technologies and laboratory tools and, more important, stick to the essence of the time-honored medical science, practicing innovation when using TCM theories. Tus Nobel Prize will prompt more basic scientific research into ancient TCM texts and wa

9、ys to explore research findings. Effective combination of TCM and WM . There are enormous treasure in TCM, so it can play a more important role in modern medicine. In addition, a simple application of Western medical standards to TCM wont work, Chinese medicine development needs more open inclusive

10、of Chinese and Western to make breakthroughs. Improving the innovation mechanism. China should focus on cultivating good academic research environment and scientific research mechanism to encourage more scientists. China spends more than 1 billion yuan ($156 million) annually on TCM-related research, and that investment should be further strengthened. Thank you
