1. This chapter might perhaps have been entitled “Petroleum as a Primary Source of Heat, Light and Power“, for it is not intended to do more than briefly mention those other important cases where oil is a secondary source of energy.

Among the most important of these is the use of petroleum fuels in central power stations for the generation of electricity, supplementing or replacing the solid fuel historically used for this purpose. An equally striking use of petroleum is in the gas

、industry where, in addition to the very large quantities of gas oil and fuel oil employed for enriching or carburetting water gas(thus increasing its calorific value to the level normally required by regulations), modern techniques enable us to manufacture town gas from any petroleum feedstock, from

、 methane to heavy fuel oil. Thus heat, light and power in the familiar form of gas or electricity “on tap“ may well be manufactured from petroleum fuels in the first place.

2. Fuels derived from petroleum may be in gaseous, liquid or solid form. The solid fuels may be dealt with briefly. Wax, in the form of candles, is a long established illuminant, while petroleum coke, though on occasions marketed as a fuel

、, finds its preferred use as a material for the preparation of carbon electrodes. 3. Petroleum gases consist in principle of hydrocarbons in the C1 to C4 range. The expressions C1,C2,C3 . are a convenient sh

、orthand for designation hydrocarbons with respectively 1,2,3 (and so on) atoms of carbon in the molecule. Thus the term “C4 hydrocarbons“ covers not only the paraffin hydrocarbon butane (C4H10), but can also include other hydrocarbons such as

、iso-butane, and the three unsaturated butylenes, which also contain 4 carbon atoms. 4. Most of the total world pool of petroleum gases consists of natural gas (mainly methane, CH4) which is usually obtained in association with crude oil dire

、ct from the wells and may be piped over long distances to its point of utilization. Another large source of petroleum gas is that produced in refineries, which is generally less rich in methane, containing more hydrocarbons of the C2, C3 and

、 C4 groups. 5. The C3 and C4 hydrocarbons derived either from natural gases or refinery gases are generally separated and, being fairly easily liquefiable under pressure, are generically known as liquefied petroleum gas or l.p.g.

L.P.G。In the United States these liquefied gases are largely obtained from field production: elsewhere they mostly originate during distillation of crude oil and further processing, as in the various conversion processes such as thermal cracking and reforming,

、 and catalytic cracking and reforming. These liquefied petroleum gases represent an important source of high calorific value fuel. 6. It is the fuels which are in a liquid state at normal ambient temperatures and atm

、ospheric pressures which spring most readily to mind, namely gasolines (aviation and motor), kerosines and tractor vaporizing oil, gas oils and, to a continually increasing extent, diesel fuel and residual fuel oil.

、。7. The direct utilization of petroleum as a fuel has sometimes been divided into so-called “internal“ and “external“ combustion processes. In the former the fuel converts heat into work, either through the medium of a reciprocating or piston engine where the combustio

、n process is intermittent, or in, say, a gas turbine where the combustion is continuous. The other group, where combustion does not take place in an engine, covers such things as steam raising, illumination and heating processes of all kinds.

This method of classification, however, is not particularly attractive and it might be simpler to regard the division as between engine fuels and those for other applications. 42. Preface(石油词典的)前言1. The petroleum

、 Industry is varied and complex and is dependent upon a vast body of scientific personnel and technology. Each area of specialization is almost an industry within itself. The principle functions are exploration, geophysics, drilling, production

The basic principle of oil refining is to separate crude oil into its major chemical components simply by heating and distilling off the various fractions in a tower.

However, the processes to achieve this end are very complex and require complicated equipment and procedures to obtain petroleum products such as fuels, lubricants, asphalts, and waxes from the various types of crudes processed through the refinery.

、brary. 1.The petroleum in an oil and gas reservoir will never be completely recovered. A fraction will always remain in the reservoir for a number of reasons. For example, the reservoir may have in

、sufficient energy of its own to expel the petroleum, capillary forces will prevent oil movement, the oil may be too viscous to move under reservoir conditions or some may be contained in blind pores which are not linked up to the overall reservoir porosity system (though this would beg the question

、of how petroleum might have entered in the first place). An ideal recovery mechanism would optimize the rate of petroleum production (and with it cash flow and the return on investment) and

、 maximize the proportion of petroleum that will be eventually recovered. In practice, there tends to be a trade off between the two objectives: the recovery scheme that gets the oil out of the ground fastest (usually preferred by oil comp

、anies) frequently leaves a large proportion of it behind (usually not liked by governments). A consequence of improvements in recovery methods is that the recoverable reserves of fields tend to be occasionally revised upwar

、ds (which is good for share prices and cheaper than exploration). A 2reserves growth in a 10 billion barrel oilfield, for example, could be worth hundreds of millions of pounds. 2.Petroleum recovery mechanisms are divided

、into three broad categories. (1) Primary recovery, in which the inherent energy of the reservoir or adjacent aquifer provides the necessary drive for petroleum production. Primary recovery mechanisms include gas cap drive, solution gas drive, com

、paction drive and aquifer drive. (2). Secondary recovery, in which additional energy is introduced into the reservoir-aquifer system to accelerate production and increase ultimate recovery. Secondary recovery mechanisms include seawater and gas injection.

(3) Tertiary recovery, more commonly referred to as enhanced oil rcovery (EOR), which involves changing the physical and chemical properties of the reservoir. EOR methods include the introduction of heat through fireflood

、ing or steamflooding to reduce the viscosity of heavy oils and improve their mobility and the addition of chemicals such as surfactants and CO2 to improve oil permeability. 3. Inorganic geochemistry can make contributions to the desig

、n of all three types of recovery processes. Its contribution to primary recovery is largely to early prediction of reservoir quality. 4. The main corrosive fluids affecting oil and gas fields areH2S, known as sour gas, and CO2.

CO2。H2S is corrosive to most materials used in petroleum productionand is highly toxic. CO2 is also highly corrosive. These gases may be natural reservoir fluids or may be generated as an unwelcome by-product of the petroleum recovery proces

、s itself. It is important to know which. Inorganic geochemistry can assist in identifying the origin of the fluid, likely quantities to be produced and reservoir intervals which are particularly prone to corrosive fluid production.

44.Introduction to Reservoir Engineering (I)1. The condition under which crude petroleum and natural gas occur in nature have been outlined in earlier chapters together with a discussion of the methods used in finding the various local accumulations or r

、eservoirs. Normally, absolute proof of the presence of hydrocarbons can only be obtained by drilling wells, which also provide the only outlet, and practically the whole of the current petroleum production is derived in this way.

2. Ultimately the worlds commercial hydrocarbon reserves will be greatly increased by the mining of tar sands andthe distillation of oil shales; 依靠开采沥青砂和提炼油页岩,世界的商用烃的储量将会有很大的增加:the first commercial-scale plant exploiting the Athabasca tar sands of Northern Albe

、rta is in fact now in operation, and the production of shale oil on a modest scale has a long history in various countries. However, at present these methods are only of limited significance and no more than brief reference will be made

、to them in this chapter. 3. The problems arising in the course of production from the conventional type of field are broadly speaking of two kinds. First, there are the mechanical difficulties involved in the drilling of wells to obtain access

、 to the producing formation and in lifting the oil to surface; 首先是机械困难,它是与钻井以达到产油构造以及把油提取到地表上来有关系的:so far as these are concerned, the practical methods available are not dissimilar in principle to those used in the production of underground water, though there are many complications in detail due to

、 generally greater depth and higher pressure. 4. Secondly, various specific and important problem arise from the fact that oil is always intimately associated with gas and water, and at the same time the amount in any particular rese

、rvoir is limited. Removal of oil leads necessarily to a reduction in pressure and a redistribution of the reservoir fluids; 同时,它也是由于任何特定储层中的问题是有限的,石油的提取必然会造成压力的下降和储层流体的再分布;in consequence, the practicable rate of production declines with time until continued operation becomes unprofitable, even though only a fraction of the oil originally in place has been recovered. The recovery actually achieved from a given reservoir is dependent partly on the natural conditions and partly on the design and control of t
