1、Lesson 1: Sonnet 29By William Shakespeare (1564-1616),the greatest dramatist inthe world and the greatestpoet in Britain who wrote37 plays , 154 sonnets and a few long poems,The first 126 of his sonnets were addressed to his patron赞助人 Mr. W.H., a young, handsome nobleman. They are all on the theme o

2、f this friendship.,sonnet: a poem of 14 lines in iambic抑扬格pentameter 五音步 with a rhyme scheme韵脚 of abab cdcd efef gg in Shakespearean sonnetsiambic a.: the most frequently used of metrical patterns featuring in an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one in each foot, e.g. Whn, n /dsgrce/ wth f

3、r/tne nd/ mns ees/ ll/ lne/ bwep/ m ut/cst stte/ pentameter: pent-, Gr. five; -meter, foot. In the case of iambus, there are 2 syllables in each meter or foot.,The sonnet was first written by the Italian poet Francesco Petrarch(1304-74) who had been in love with a girl named Laura. When she later ma

4、rried a nobleman, Petrarch wrote her love poems in sonnet secretly. Later the sonnet was introduced to England.,Shakespeare wrote altogether 154 sonnets which have no titles but are numbered. This one is the 29th. It can be divided into 2 parts: an octave plus a sestet, that is, the first 8 lines be

5、long to part 1, and the last 6 belong to part 2.
