10、e Translatability of Culturally-loaded Terms from Chinese to English in Light of the Skopos Theory GUO Xu-ming (Hunan University of Science and Engineering, Yongzhou, 425100, China) Abstract: A Chinese culturally loaded term refers to the word, phrase, or idiom symbolizing a unique feature of Chines
11、e culture. Their translatability is quite low if evaluated by the traditional translation criteria because of their cultural connotation, but can be greatly improved if evaluated by the translation criterion of the Skopos Theory. This theory emphasizes that it is the end that justifies the means Acc
12、ording to its translation criterion of “adequacy”, if the information contained in the Chinese culturally loaded term is transmitted efficiently and exactly to its English expression achieving the purpose of cross-cultural communication in the target situation, , no matter it is translated in the wa
13、y of literal translation, free translation or the neutralization of the two means, this target expression is considered adequate for its translation purpose.
