1、DynEd nde-Module 3-8Module 3 I. Daily Activities:1. Kathys Schedule Kathy is a writer. She works for a newspaper, and she also writes books. Her daily schedule varies. Her schedule changes everyday. She often works late at night. As a result, she doesnt like to get up early. Q Sometimes, she gets up

2、 so late that she doesnt have time for breakfast. For example, she didnt get up until 9:15. She didnt have time for breakfast. She just ate a cup of coffee. Then she worked on her computer at home until 11:30. Q She left home at 11:45 and took a bus downtown to her office at newspaper. It is now 2:0

3、0 and she is eating a late lunch. She is very hungry. So she is having a large lunch. She is hungry, because she didnt eat the breakfast. Q Late this afternoon, she is going to have a meeting with her boss. She is going to make a request. She wants to take a week off, so that she can go to Paris. He

4、r best friend who with her parents is going to get married. Q This everying she is going to interview an important person. the interview is schedule to last an hour, from 6:30 until 7:30. She is going to interview the person about problem of nuclear waste. After the interview shes going to work late

5、. She wants to finish the story before she goes to bed. Q She thinks its going to be an important story. We all need energy but we have to think carefully about safety. 2. Dianes Schedule Diane is a house wife and a mother. Her husband, Dick, drives a taxi. Their two children both to school. Q Their

6、 school is about 20 minutes awry by car. QThis morning, dine got up early at 6:30. She cooked breakfast for her family at 7:00. At 7:15 they sat down together and ate the breakfast. Q And 7:45 she drove her kids to school. After taking her kids to school she and her friend went shopping together. Th

7、ey went to a shopping center and bought some clothes for their children. After that she and her friend went to a health club. Q They stayed the health club for about an hour. Her friend trying to lose the weight. Q Now Diane is backing home. She is cleaning the house. She doesnt have much time. In a

8、bout an hour, at 3:00 she is going to pick up her kids at school. Q After dinner, Diane is going to take a class. Twice a week in the evening, she studies the painting. 9、es II. Our World 1. Our Planet, Earth This is our planet, Earth. Its one of nine planets that travel around our sun. Its the third planet from the sun. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. The second closest planet to the sun is Venus. Our planet is 93 million miles from the sun. The sun gives

10、us the energy that we need. Q The sun is very important to us all. It gives us heat and light. Without it there would be not life from on earth. If we were closer to the sun, it would be too hot to us. Our planet would burn. If we were farther from the sun, it would be too cold to us. Our planetwoul

11、d freeze. As you can see, the balance of nature is very important. In nature, small changes can make big differences. Q2. Air, Water & Pollution Beside energy from the sun, we also need water and air. Without water and air, there would be no life. Without enough water, there arent enough plants and

12、trees. Plants and trees produce air that we breathe. We also need water to grow our food. In some parts of our world, there isnt enough water. Without enough water, food cant grow, and people dont have enough food to eat. Q Condition must be right for life to exist. When conditions are not right, li

13、fe cannot exist. For example, millions of years ago there were forms of life that no longer exist. They die out because conditions changed. Q Clear air and clean water, we need them both to live our lives. The mountains, the rivers, the forests and all of nature are a part of us. This beautiful plan

Q He tried to buy airplane tickets last week, but the flight was full. Yesterday his travel agent called him and told him there was a space

16、 on the flight. Max is going to get the ticket in the mail tomorrow. Q Hes going to fly on British Airlines. It takes about 10 hours flight from San Francisco to London. If he leaves on Saturday afternoon, hell arrive London on Sunday Morning. Q Max is going to arrive in London on a Sunday. The day

17、after he arrived London, hes going to attend a meeting. However, hell probably very tired. The time difference between London and San Francisco is 8 hours. That means when its late night in London, its afternoon in San Francisco. As a result, its often hard to sleep in the hotel at night. Max will p

18、robably watch a late movie on TV before he goes to bad. If he still cant sleep, he may telephone his wife and children in San Francisco. Its always nice to travel and see the world, but Max misses his family. Whenever he is away from home, he looks forward to coming back. As the same goals: Theres n

19、o place like home. 2. Choices When he lands in London, hell claim his baggage and go through customs. Then hell have to decide how to get his hotel. One choice is to go by Taxi. But the Taxi fare is expensive. Another choice is to go by bus or subway. In London the subway system is called the underg

20、round. Q Max isnt sure what he will do. If he is tired, he may decide to take a taxi. On the other hand, he may decide to take a bus. If he decides to take a bus or a taxi, he can see the countryside. Q Once he arrives at his hot el, hell check in. Hotels are expensive in London, but weekend rate ar

21、e a bit less. Sometime its possible to get a cheaper rate if you stay for several days. Q Max has a good travel agent, so hes going to get a 20% discount. Q3. Meeting a Friend After he checks in to his room, Max is going to telephone a friend. One of his best friends, John, lives in Brighton. Bright

22、on is about an hour south of London by train. Maxs friend, John, is a famous writer. Max is looking forward to seeing him. Q Whenever they get together, they go out to dinner and talk about many things. Its always interesting to talk to John. John has an interesting mind. Hes always thinking about n

23、ew stories and new projects. Last year, for example, he wrote a story that appeared on television. It was a story about a man who lost his memory. Now hes working on a new story that will appear on television next year. Q John also knows a lot about wine. Whenever they have dinner together, John cho

25、 5 I. On a trip 1. A Paris Vacation Kathy is on a one-week vacation from her job as a journalist. She hasnt had a vacation in a long time. She has come to Paris to attend her best friends wedding. Q This is the third time she has been in Paris. The first time she came to Paris was as a student, ten

26、years ago. During that trip, she was so busy that she didnt have time to see any of the sights.This time she plans to relax and enjoy herself. Q Kathy arrived in Paris the day before yesterday, which was Saturday. Her plane landed at 3:00, two hours behind schedule. Her plane was supposed to arrive

27、at 1:00. Q After arriving, Kathy visited with her friend and met her friends fiance for the first time. He is a very successful Italian businessman. The wedding was yesterday. It was a small wedding, but very nice. Q After the wedding, the newlyweds left for a skiing trip in the Swiss Alps. They wen

28、t by rental car. Unfortunately, they got tied up in traffic. They didnt arrive at their hotel until late last night. Fortunately, they had confirmed reservations, so they had no trouble checking in. Q They arrived at their hotel last night, which was Sunday. They plan to stay there until Thursday. T

29、hen they will travel on to Salzburg, in Austria. They are going to meet up with Kathy there before she returns to the U.S. The three of them are going to stay in a castle hotel, ten miles outside Salzburg. Q The hotel is on a lake, and the view from the hotel is wonderful. The hotel is in a five hun

30、dred-year-old castle. It used to belong to an Austrian prince. Everyone is looking forward to staying there. Q 2. Todays Activities Today, in Paris, Kathy is enjoying her self. This morning she took a walk through the streets of Paris. After her walk, at around 9:00, she enjoyed a delicious cup of c

31、offee in a small cafe. At ten oclock, she went to the Notre Dame Cathedral, where she listened to some beautiful organ music. Q Now shes at the Louvre, the famous art museum. Its 1:30. She has been there for two hours, since 11:30. Shes looking at the Mona Lisa, one of the worlds most famous paintin

32、gs. In another hour shes going to leave the museum and do some shopping. She wants to buy a nice dress for herself, and some perfume for her mother. Q This evening she has a date to meet someone for dinner. Shes going to have dinner with Pierre, a famous photographer.She interviewed him two years ag

33、o. Since then they have kept in touch. The have written to each other several times. Q Kathy is interested in doing a project with him. She would do the writing, and he would take the pictures. Shes looking forward to talking to him about the project. She doesnt know it, but Pierre has romantic inte

34、ntions. He thinks shes very attractive. 3. Florence and Beyond Tomorrow Kathy is going to leave Paris and fly to Florence, Italy. Shes planning to stay in Florence for one day, until Wednesday evening. Pierre would like to go to Florence with her. If they go together, it could be the beginning of so

35、mething beautiful. On the other hand, Kathy may not want that kind of relationship with Pierre. In any case, Kathy is planning to enjoy Florence. This will be her first visit there. The last time she was in Italy she visited Rome, but she didnt have time to go to Florence. Shes looking forward to se

36、eing some of the beautiful old buildings and great works of art. From Florence, shes going to take a train to Salzburg, where she will join her friends. They are going to meet her at the station. Q She has never been to Salzburg. It will be her first time. Like so many cities in Europe, Salzburg has

37、 an interesting history. She wants to visit the place where Mozart was born. He was born there more than 200 years ago. Kathy only has time to stay in Salzburg for a couple of days. On Friday she and her friends are going to attend a concert. Q Mozart was born in Salzburg. She has to leave Saturday

38、evening. She will fly to Paris, where she will catch her flight back to the States. Though a week isnt very long, Kathys memories of this trip will last a lifetime. She is glad she came. Q 4. 39、we need energy. We need energy for heat, for light, and for transportation. When its cold, we need energy for heat. When its dared, we need energy for light. When we want to travel, we need energy for transportation. Q Here are some of the ways we get energy. Fossil fuels include coal, oil and natur

40、al gas. Fossil fuels are an important source of energy. We also get energy from hydroelectric power stations. Hydroelectric power comes from the e nergy of falling water. The energy of falling water is converted into electricity. Nuclear power is another way to get energy. Heat from a nuclear reacti

41、on is converted into electricity. Q There are also other ways to get energy. Solar cells can convert sunlight directly into electricity. However, solar energy is still expensive and underdeveloped. Wind power is also a safe source of energy. However, it is only useful in areas where there is a lot o

42、f wind. Like solar energy, the use of wind power is still quite limited. Q 2. What about the Future? One of the main problems we now face is how to reduce the use of fissile fuels. There are several reasons why this is important. One reason is that the supply of fossil fuels is running out. Fossil f

43、uels are not renewable. As the supply decreases, the price will increase. There may even be war. Q There is also the problem of transport. Large oil tankers transport oil across the oceans. Sometimes there are accidents, and large amounts of oil spill into the ocean. In the past few years, there hav

44、e been several accidents. These accidents have caused the deaths of many fish, birds and other wildlife. Q Large oil tankers transport oil across the oceans. Another problem is air pollution. Burning fossil fuels causes air pollution. The waste gases enter our atmosphere and cause pollution, which d

45、amages our environment. For example, air pollution causes acid rain, and acid rain is killing many of our forests. There is also the problem of global warming.When a large amount of carbon gases are in the atmosphere, our world begins to heat up. If the temperature rises, the polar ice caps will beg

46、in to melt, and the oceans will rise. So, as you can see, fossil fuels cause many problems. Q Nuclear energy also has problems. One problem is safety. Nuclear reactors are not completely safe. There is always some risk of an accident. There is also the problem of nuclear waste. The radiation from nu

47、clear waste products is very dangerous. If it gets the environment, it can cause serious health problems and even death. Q How about hydroelectric power? Can it help us move away from fossil fuels? Hydroelectric power is a clean source of energy. However, building dams does change the environment. T
