The director, Robert Mulligan, reinterpreted it and gave life to those characters on the screen. The film not only captures the soul of the book, but also makes itself a masterpiece in the film
3、 history.The story happens during the Great Depression in Maycomb, which is “a tired old town”, and its life pace is very slow because there is “nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with”. People there lead a poor and isolated life. Young Scout and her elder brother Jem, with their l
4、oving father Atticus who is a respected lawyer, live in this old town. Atticus always teaches them “its a sin to kill a mocking bird”. Scout and Jem are innocent children, they with their newly met friends Dill are terrified of, and curious about their reclusive neighbor “Boo” Raddley who is describ
5、ed as a fierce monster. The days pass by quietly. However, the peaceful life is broken by a case that a white man Bob Ewell accuses a black guy Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella Ewell. Driven by his justice, Atticus stands out and comes to Toms defense, which is an incomprehensible thing t
6、o many native whites at the era that racial discrimination is very severe. Though the evidence shows that Tom is innocent, he still cant clean up his name and is found guilty. Sadly, Tom is killed while he is trying to escape prison. Some time later, Scout and Jem are attacked by “white trash” Bob E
7、well who is angry about what Atticus has done and try to take revenge on his children. Fortunately, Boo appears in time and saves these two children from the claws of Bob. 8、.The “mocking bird” symbolizes innocence and goodness, and in the story, it implies Boo and Tom. One is lucky finally while the other ends in tragedy. They do nothing wrong but are unfairly treated by others. The film is an image of that time in America. It assails the racial discrimination and inju
9、stice in the American society and calls for kindness, conscience and justice.The begging part of the film gives close-ups of the childs collection of toys indicates the film is taken in the angle of Scout and Jem. And as a result, the film is full of innocence and purity. Children understand little
10、of the world, so they view the society with their clean eyes. They never look down upon black people, they will not be afraid to find the legendary “Boo”, they stand with true. This is the hope the director wants to convey. Most of the shot given to Atticus, is from a low angle, which shows the dign
11、ity of Atticus. The close-ups of Boo Raddleys weedy and dilapidate house along with mysterious background music give us a feeling of horrific. At the court, when Atticus is going to leaving, the shot of the film remains at the balcony where everyone stands up silently to show their respect to Atticu
12、s. Besides, when two children is attacked, the shot doesnt expose immediately who does this and who saves them, but at the following scene Boo finally appears, which arose the audiences curiosity. 13、ire most of the movie is the wonderful acting skills of the actors. At Gregory Pecks performance, an Atticus lives on the screen, who is righteous, courageous, persistent, gentle and considerate. His politeness to his neighbors, his love for his children through his eyes, his greatness at the court,
14、 his fearlessness to the risk and his forbearance and contempt for Ewell when he spitting at Atticus face also will live forever in audiences heart.The two young actors who play Scout and Jem, act perfectly as well. They are not restrained before the camera and every movement and lovely facial expression shows cuteness and innocence of children. No wonder it is universally regarded as a classic, and it worth watching.
