1、教学设计Using Language:Listening and speaking整体设计教材分析We will mainly deal with listening and speaking in this period.At the beginning,students listen to a conversation among young people.Carla and Hari are students in Trinidad.Their Chinese friends Li Mei and Wu Ping,are visiting for the Carnival holiday

2、 in February.They are joining in a parade for Carnival in Trinidad.This listening activity is not only to offer students knowledge about how to celebrate Carnival in Trinidad but to encourage students to listen and then use what they have heard to help them answer questions.It is an important exerci

3、se because it links skills together and uses them to produce a useful phone call.Make sure students read the questions before they listen to the tape.This is to sharpen their attention and listen for the answers.This will also help them get the gist of the listening text.The teaching procedures may

4、be as follows:First,let students go through the directions, pictures and the questions and guess what the listening text may be about.Play the tape for students to listen and decide whether their guessing is right.Second,ask them to listen again to answer the questions.Third,let them listen a third

5、time to check their answers.While they are listening,the teacher should pause and repeat the key sentences to help students understand.When checking the answers,explain some difficult listening points if necessary.In the end,show them the listening text and let them read and retell it.This step can

6、help students understand and grasp the listening material far further.Perhaps some students will find it hard to listen to and understand listening materials.Encourage them not to give up.The more they listen to English,the easier it becomes.The speaking exercise is intended to give students the opp

7、ortunity to practice a phone conversation using the functional items.So they should learn some expressions on how to make phone calls and invitations and express thanks first.Then they are required to create such a phone conversation.During the course,let them know the polite forms of English are im

8、portant and should be practiced in a variety of situations.Also encourage them to use vocabulary from the reading and listening passages.This period places emphasis on developing students listening and speaking abilities.We should try our best to encourage students to say something.Dont always corre

30、our their mothers with cards,gifts,and flowers.First observance in Philadelphia,Pa.in 1907,it is based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and by Anna Jarvis in 1907.Although it wasnt celebrated in the US.until 1907,there were days honouring mothers even in the days of ancient Greece.In those

31、days,however,it was Rhea,the Mother of the gods that was given honour.Later, in the 1600s,in England there was an annual observance called “Mothering Sunday”It was celebrated during June,on the fourth Sunday.On Mothering Sunday,the servants,who generally lived with their employers,were encouraged to

32、 return home and honour their mothers.It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion.In the US.,in 1907 Ana Jarvis,from Philadelphia,began a campaign to establish a national Mothers Day.Jarvis persuaded her mothers church in Grafton,West Virginia to celebrate Mot

33、hers Day on the second anniversary of her mothers death,the 2nd Sunday of May.The next year Mothers Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.Jarvis and others began a letterwriting campaign to ministers,businessmen,and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mothers Day.They were successfu

34、l.President Woodrow Wilson,in 1914,made the official announcement proclaiming Mothers Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.Many other countries of the world celebrate their own Mothers Day at different times throughout the year.Denmark,Finland,Italy,Turkey

35、, Australia,and Belgium celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday in May,as in the U S.Fathers DayThe Third Sunday in JuneThe United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honoured by their children.On the third Sunday in June,fathers all acros

36、s the United States are given presents,treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special.The origin of Fathers Day is not clear.Some say that it began with a church service in West Virginia in 1908.Others say the first Fathers Day ceremony was held in Vancouver,Washington.The president of the Chic

37、ago branch (分部) of the Lions Club,Harry Meek,is said to have celebrated the first Fathers Day with his organization in 1915,and the day that they chose was the third Sunday in June,the closest date to Meeks own birthday!Regardless of when the first true Fathers Day occurred,the strongest promoter of

38、 the holiday was Mrs.Bruce John Dodd of Spokane,Washington.Mrs.Dodd felt that she had an outstanding father.He was a veteran of the Civil War.His wife had died young,and he had raised six children without their mother.In 1909,Mrs.Dodd approached her own minister and others in Spokane about having a

39、church service dedicated to fathers on June 5,her fathers birthday.That date was too soon for her minister to prepare the service,so he spoke a few weeks later on June 19th.From then on,the state of Washington celebrated the third Sunday in June as Fathers Day.Children made special desserts,or visit

40、ed their fathers if they lived apart.States and organizations began lobbying (游说) the Congress to declare an annual Fathers Day.In 1916,President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea,but it was not until 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to “establish more intimate relatio

41、ns between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations”Since then,fathers had been honoured and recognized by their families throughout the country on the third Sunday in June.When children cant visit their fathers or take them out to dinner,they send a greeting card.Traditionally,fathers prefer greeting cards that are not too sentimental.Most greeting cards are whimsical (奇形怪状的,异想天开的) so fathers laugh when they open them.
