2、musical forms traditionally found in the Southern United States and the Canadian Maritimes that evolved rapidly beginning in the 1920s.1 Distinctive variations of the genre have also emerged elsewhere including Australian country music. The term country music gained popularity in the 1940s when the

3、earlier term hillbilly music came to be seen as denigrating. Country music was widely embraced in the 1970s, while country and Western has declined in use since that time, except in the United Kingdom and Ireland, where it is still commonly used.1 However, in the Southwestern United States a differe

4、nt mix of ethnic groups created the music that became the Western music of the term country and Western. 5、itions of Western liturgical and secular music, encompassing a broad period from roughly the 11th century to present times.1 The central norms of this tradition became codified between 1550 and 1900, which is known as the common practice period. European music is largely distinguished from many othe

6、r non-European and popular musical forms by its system of staff notation, in use since about the 16th century.2 Western staff notation is used by composers to prescribe to the performer the pitch, speed, meter, individual rhythms and exact execution of a piece of music. This leaves less room for pra

7、ctices such as improvisation and ad libitum ornamentation, that are frequently heard in non-European art music (compare Indian classical music and Japanese traditional music) and popular music.345 The term “classical music“ did not appear until the early 19th century, in an attempt to “canonize“ the

Romantic music as a movement evolved from

10、the formats, genres and musical ideas established in earlier periods, such as the classical period, and went further in the name of expression and syncretism of different art-forms with music. Romanticism does not necessarily refer to romantic love, though that theme was prevalent in many works comp

11、osed during this time period, both in literature, painting or music. Romantic music attempted to increase emotional expression and power to describe deeper truths or human feelings, while preserving but in many cases extending the formal structures from the classical period, in others, creating new

12、forms that were deemed better suited to the new subject matter. 13、 Romantic music See also: List of Romantic composers The music of the Romantic era, from roughly the second decade of the 19th century to the early 20th century, was characterized by increased attention to an extended melodic line, as well as expressive and emotional elements, paralleling romanticis

14、m in other art forms. Musical forms began to break from the Classical era forms (even as those were being codified), with free-form pieces like nocturnes, fantasias, and preludes being written where accepted ideas about the exposition and development of themes were ignored or minimized.20 The music

15、became more chromatic, dissonant, and tonally colorful, with tensions (with respect to accepted norms of the older forms) about key signatures increasing.21 The art song (or Lied) came to maturity in this era, as did the epic scales of grand opera, ultimately transcended by Richard Wagners Ring cycl

16、e.22 In the 19th century, musical institutions emerged from the control of wealthy patrons, as composers and musicians could construct lives independent of the nobility. Increasing interest in music by the growing middle classes throughout western Europe spurred the creation of organizations for the

17、 teaching, performance, and preservation of music. The piano, which achieved its modern construction in this era (in part due to industrial advances in metallurgy) became widely popular with the middle class, whose demands for the instrument spurred a large number of piano builders. Many symphony or

18、chestras date their founding to this era.21 Some musicians and composers were the stars of the day; some, like Franz Liszt and Niccol Paganini, fulfilled both roles.23 The family of instruments used, especially in orchestras, grew. A wider array of percussion instruments began to appear. Brass instr

19、uments took on larger roles, as the introduction of rotary valves made it possible for them to play a wider range of notes. The size of the orchestra (typically around 40 in the Classical era) grew to be over 100.21 Gustav Mahlers 1906 Symphony No. 8, for example, has been performed with over 150 in

20、strumentalists and choirs of over 400. European cultural ideas and institutions began to follow colonial expansion into other parts of the world. There was also a rise, especially toward the end of the era, of nationalism in music (echoing, in some cases, political sentiments of the time), as compos

21、ers such as Edvard Grieg, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Antonn Dvok echoed traditional music of their homelands in their compositions.24,Baroque music describes a style of European classical music approximately extending from 1600 to 1750.1 This era is said to begin in music after the Renaissance and

22、 was followed by the Classical era. The word “baroque“ came from the Portuguese word barroco, meaning “misshapen pearl“,2 a strikingly fitting characterization of the architecture of this period; later, the name came to be applied also to its music. Baroque music forms a major portion of the classic

23、al music canon, being widely studied, performed, and listened to. It is associated with composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Arcangelo Corelli, Claudio Monteverdi, Jean-Philippe Rameau and Henry Purcell. During the period, composers and performers used more elaborate musical ornamentation, made changes in musical notation, and developed new instrumental playing techniques. Baroque music expanded the size, range, and complexity of instrumental pe

25、rformance, and also established opera as a musical genre. It is named after Pope Gregory I, Bishop of Rome from 590 to 604, who is traditionally credited for having ordered the simplification and cataloging of music assigned to specific celebrations in the church calendar. The resulting body of music is the first to

In general, the chants were learned by the viva voce method, that is, by following the given example orally, which took many years of experience in the Schola Cantorum. Gregorian chant originated in monastic life, in which celebrating the
