From data collected, it seems the things that cause us to lose the most sleep, on average, are sporting events, time changes, and holidays.Around the world, people changed sleep patterns thanks to the start or end of daylight savings time. Russians, for example, began to wake up about a half-hour later each day after President Vladimir Putin shifted the country permanently to “winter time” starting on October 36. Russia's other late nights and early mornings generally correspond to public holidays. On New Year's Eve, Russians have the world's latest bedtime, hitting the hay at around 3:30 am.Russians also get up an hour later on International Women's Day, the day for treating and celebrating female relatives.Similarly, Americans' late nights, late mornings, and longest sleeps fall on three-day weekends. Canada got the least sleep of the year the night it beat Sweden in the Olympic hockey(冰球) final. The World Cup is also chiefly responsible for sleep deprivation(剥夺). The worst night for sleep in the U.K. was the night of the England-Italy match on June 15. Brits stayed up a half-hour later to watch it, and then they woke up earlier than usual the next morning thanks to summer nights, the phenomenon in which the sun barely sets in northern countries in the summer time. That was nothing, though, compared to Germans, Italians, and the French, who stayed up around an hour and a half later on various days throughout the summer to watch the Cup.It should be made clear that not everyone has a device to record their sleep patterns, in some of these nations, it's likely that only the richest people do. And people who elect to track their sleep may try to get more sleep than the average person. Even if that's the case, though, the above findings are still striking. If the most health-conscious among us have such deep swings in our shut-eye levels throughout the year, how much sleep are the rest of us losing? 1. What does the author say about people's sleeping habits? A. They are culture-related.2B. They affect people's health.C. They change with the seasons.D. They vary from person to person.2. What do we learn about the Russians regarding sleep? A. They don't sleep much on weekends.B. They get less sleep on public holidays.C. They don't fall asleep until it is very late.D. They sleep longer than people elsewhere.3. What is the most probable reason for some rich people to use a device to record their patterns? A. They are involved in a sleep research.B. They have trouble falling asleep.C. They want to get sufficient sleep.D. They want to go to bed on regular hours.4. What does the author imply in the last paragraph? A. Sleeplessness does harm to people's health.B. Few people really know the importance of sleep.C. It is important to study your sleep patterns.D. Average people probably sleep less than the rich. 根据第一段第一句“Everybody sleeps, but what people stay up late to catch—or wake up early in order not to miss—varies by culture.” 根据第二段第三句“Russia's other late nights and early mornings generally correspond to public holidays.” 根据最后一段第二句“And people who elect to track their sleep may try to get more sleep than the average person.” 根据文章最后一句“If the most health-conscious among us have 3such deep swings in our shut-eye levels through out the year, how much sleep are the rest of us losing? ”可知,选 B 项。Ⅱ. 完形填空(2017·四川广元二模)My 14-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat at the same time at a second-hand clothing store. Now it is an ecological disaster area. Nauru's heartbreaking story could have one good consequence—other countries might learn from its mistakes. For thousands of years, Polynesian people lived on the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798. He was the British captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship. He called the island Pleasant Island. However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. The whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island. A ten-year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900.Nauru's real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate (磷酸盐) on the island. In fact, it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which is a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began mining the phosphate.A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine. When a company strip-mines, it removes the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants. Strip mining totally destroys the land. Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.In 1968, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate.Unfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses. Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem—their phosphate was running out. Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing. By 2000, Nauru was financially ruined. Experts say that it would take approximately $433,600, 000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen.21. What might be the author's purpose in writing the text? A. To seek help for Nauru's problems.B. To give a warning to other countries.C. To show the importance of money.D. To tell a heartbreaking story of a war.2. What was Nauru like before the Europeans came? A. Rich and powerful. B. Modern and open.C. Peaceful and attractive. D. Greedy and aggressive.3. Which of the following was a cause of Nauru's financial problem? A. Its leaders misused the money.B. It spent too much repairing the island.C. Its phosphate mining cost much money.D. It lost millions of dollars in the civil war.4. What can we learn about Nauru from the last paragraph? A. The ecological damage is difficult to repair.B. The leaders will take the experts' words seriously.C. The island was abandoned by the Nauruans.D. The phosphate mines were destroyed. 根据文章第二段“Polynesian people lived in the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization. We set off early for a distant water hole. A huge elephant, covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasn't going to hurry now. He'd drink a while and then rest in the shade, and then drink again—or so we thought. What actually happened was that he drank deeply and stepped away. Then he suddenly fell down. Within minutes he was dead.We called animal doctor Jeremiah Poghon immediately. He removed the head of a poisoned arrow from the elephant's body, and let out over 100 litters of pus (胺)—the result of the elephants meeting with a poacher(偷猎者) months before.Today's poacher shoots from a blind. He fires an arrow, covered with poison, into the body of an elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant might die in an hour or two; if not, he might have to follow the elephant for days before it dies. Often the arrow head fails to kill the elephant at once—it doesn't mean the poison won't finally kill the elephant, but it will be a slow death.Living in Tsavo through these times, I could see the results of poaching from time to time. When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extraordinary silence after the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground. I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit—but I couldn't escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed a poorer and emptier place.5. While filming near the water hole, the author and his team ________.A. knew the elephant was injured4B. found the elephant acted violentlyC. tried their best to save the elephantD. thought the elephant was in good condition6. Further examination showed that the dead elephant ________.A. had suffered a lotB. had wounds all over itC. had drunk some deadly waterD. had had a good fight with a poacher7. How does the author feel when thinking about the elephant's death? A. Embarrassed. B. Funny.C. Upset. D. Relieved8. Why did the author write the text? A. To introduce an African elephant.B. To show the cruelty of poaching.C. To describe his filming experience.D. To ask readers to protect wild animals.答案与解析【文章大意】 作者通过亲眼所见告诉我们猎杀者残忍杀害大象的行为,对此表示痛心,呼吁人们保护动物。5. 答案 D解析 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“A huge elephant, covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasn't going to hurry now. He'd drink a while and then rest in the shade, and then drink again—or so we thought.”,可知他们以为大象很正常。故选 D 项。6. 答案 A解析 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“. let out over 100 litters of pus (胺)—the result of the elephants meeting with a poacher(偷猎者) months before.”,可知这头大象曾经遭受了很大的痛苦。故选 A 项。7. 答案 C解析 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extraordinary silence after the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground. I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit—but I couldn't escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the 5world seemed a poorer and emptier place.”可知当想到大象的死亡时,作者感到很不安。故选 C 项。8. 答案 D解析 写作意图题。通过文章内容可看出作者对残忍的猎杀者表示痛恨,对他们的行为表示心痛,所以写文章呼吁人们保护动物。Ⅱ. 七选五(2017·福建漳州)A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon.
