Most of the time, however, we are not even aware that were doing it. We move around in our chairs, gesture with eyebrows or a hand, meet someone elses eyes and lo

21、ok away. These are some of the many small and random things we do. But researchers have discovered in recent years that there is a system to these gestures. Every culture has its own body language, and children understand and learn its meanings, along with words. For example, a Frenchman talks and m

22、oves in French ways, while an Englishman and a male American cross their legs very differently. It is also interesting to note that in talking, Americans are likely to end a sentence with a dropping of the head or hand, as well as with a lowering of the eyelids. They finish up a question with a rais

23、e of the hand, a lift of the chin, or a widening of the eyes. Whats more, there are regional phrases too; an expert can sometimes pick out a native of Wisconsin just by the way a person uses his or her eyebrows during conversations. Everything from your sex, racial background, social class, and comm

24、unication style all influences your body language. A person who truly knows two languages uses both body languages too. A good example of this is New Yorks famous mayor, Fiorello La Guardia, who communicated in English, Italian and Yiddish.When films of his speeches are run without sound, its not to

25、o difficult to tell from his gestures the language being spoken. In fact, one of the reasons English-dubbed foreign films often seem flat is that the gestures just dont match the language. Usually, our body language acts to further emphasize our words. What the nonverbal gestures put across very oft

26、en and very efficiently is the emotional side of the message. This is clear when a person feels liked or disliked, as he or she will often communicate emotion “not in what is said but in the way it is said“. Psychologist Albert Mehrabian invented this rule: Total communication = 7 percent verbal + 3

27、8 percent oral + 55 percent facial. It shows the importance of body language. But experts in the study of communication through body movement are not yet prepared to spell out an exact dictionary of gestures, as body movements can mean many things. Along with her great success, however, Natalie Cole has lived in a world of drugs, crime, and failed marriages. “I have been to hell and back,“ she says.

Without enough money to pay the bills and to support her drug habit, Cole turned to stealing and got into trouble with the law. Only two years after being arrested and almost dying because of drugs, Coles first record won two Grammies. In 1976, she married Marvin Yancy, her songwr

They soon had a son, Robbie, and Coles life really seemed to be coming together. “Marriage to Marvin, and Robbie, was like a breath of pure, fresh air,“ she says. “I was with a man whom I loved and who loved me. we were just so close.“ Sadly, the marriage wouldnt last. 40、years of being drug-free, Cole was once again using. In 1983, Cole checked herself into a recovery program, and was finally able to mend the wounds from her difficult past.
