1、中國四川省五月十二日發生芮氏規模七點九強烈地震，截至目前，死傷人數超過數萬人，震央汶川的對外交通及聯繫中斷，六萬人生死未卜。慈濟基金會於第一時間掌握災情及勘災、賑濟管道；大陸慈濟志工且已組成勘災團，趕赴災區，全面啟動賑濟救援。全美慈濟人發起救人救命，分秒必爭；發揮愛心，馳援四川行動，勸募愛心善款，專款專用，合力推動這項長期的救援重建工作。一九九九年台灣九二一大地震的慘痛記憶猶在，氣象學家指出，這場四川大地震，威力等於五個九二一大地震，且餘震超過三百次，破壞之嚴重程度可以想見。嚴重災情傳來，慈濟基金會證嚴法師心情萬分悲慟，於開示時數度哽咽。證嚴法師表示，身為地球村的一員，人人當有生命共同體的觀念
