    2、 Longfellow (1807 1882) was born in 1807, the son of Stephen and Zilpah (Wadsworth) Longfellow. He was the second of seven children. He was Americas most beloved nineteenth-century poet, rivaling in popularity the contemporary English poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. Influenced by the romantic novelists J

    3、ames Fenimore Cooper and Washington Irving, Longfellow helped to fashion a national literature based on American myths, history, and landscapes in poems such as “The Song of Hiawatha”.,Longfellow wrote predominantly lyric poems, known for their musicality and often presenting stories of mythology an

    4、d legend. He became the most popular American poet of his day and also had success overseas. He has been criticized, however, for imitating European styles and writing specifically for the masses. Longfellow family faith was Unitarian. Longfellow was influenced by his Unitarian beliefs, his associat

    5、ion with New England Transcendentalists, and the Romantic literary movement he encountered in Europe. He believed that the vitality and originality of American literature must depend upon the nations natural environment and distinct history, as opposed to the long-standing cultural and social tradit

    6、ions that informed European literature. Longfellows poetry fell out of critical favor at the beginning of the twentieth century with the rise of literary modernism and its preoccupation with psychology, social dislocation, and political ideology. Despite his often-sentimental tone, Longfellow remain

    7、s popular for his evocation of a vanishing America, its landscapes and occupations, and his simple affection for humanity. Longfellow was awarded honorary doctoral degrees from Oxford and Cambridge universities, and after his death was the first American to be included in Poets Corner of Westminster

    18、on earth is limited and will pass very quickly, with each heartbeat a further step towards the grave. So try, like great men of the past, to make something of yourself in your short time on earth and leave behind something by which to be remembered,Brief analysis to the poem,In several of his poems,

    19、 the reader will find examples of life, love, death, contemplation, and inspiration. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow begins his poem “A Psalm of Life“ with enthusiasm that continues through most of the poem. For example, he thinks life can only be lived truly if one believes that the soul will continue t

    20、o live long after the body dies. The second stanza Longfellow states this clearly by writing, “And the grave is not its goal.“ Meaning that, life doesnt end for people simply because they die; there is always something more to be hopeful and optimistic for. He believes that people should lead heroic

    21、 and courageous lives and not sit idle and remain ineffectual while the world rapidly changes around them: “Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife!“ (part V),Longfellow encourages everyone to have faith and trust the lord and not to rely on an unknown future to be stable and suppor

    22、tive. (part VI)He advises people to seize the moments they have before them and act while thinking about their present situations. Longfellow encourages his readers to leave their own “footsteps on the sands of time“ and become important. (part VII)The final lines of the poem echo the beginning ones

    23、 and offer perhaps the most important advice in a poem. Longfellow encourages all to work and try their hardest to make their lives great and accomplish as much as they can.Longfellow uses a simple and clear way to express the impassioned attitude to life. The poem inspired the readers and received
