3、graph,Planning your Essay,Some people think the fastest way is to just start writing. They are wrong. Writing without planning is rambling. You may even get lost halfway through the essay.An outline is a plan that lays out the main parts of your essay. Once that outline is complete, the task of writ

4、ing the essay becomes more manageable.,Steps in writing an outline,Write a clear thesis statement. Write two or three topic sentences to support the thesis statement. Note that they should be complementary, but not overlapping or contradictory. Recall what you learn about writing convincing paragrap

5、hs, and provide further details or examples for each topic sentence. Write a concluding statement.,Parts of an Essay,Introduction,What is an introduction? The introduction paragraph is the first paragraph of your essay. What does it do? It introduces the main idea of your essay. A good opening parag

6、raph captures the interest of your reader and tells why your topic is important.,How do I write one?,1. The main idea of the essay stated in a single sentence called the thesis statement. Limit your entire essay to the topic introduced in your thesis statement. 2. Provide background information usin

7、g interesting facts, quotations, or definitions of important terms you will use later in the essay. Example: Hockey has been a part of life in Canada for over 120 years. It has evolved into an extremely popular sport watched and played by millions of Canadians. The game has gone through several chan

My Favorite Mode of Transport,When you stand by a busy road in Beijing, you will notice a large number of bicycles threading their way among automobiles, swiftly and quietly. You cannot help wondering why so many people have chosen to cycle instead of

As a cyclist, riding a bicycle is my favorite mode of transport because of its convenience, benefits to health and harmlessness to the environment.,The Body/Supporting Paragraphs,What are supporting paragraphs? Supporting paragraphs make up the main body of your essay. What

10、 do they do? They develop the main idea of your essay. Like all good paragraphs, each supporting paragraph should have a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a summary sentence.,How do I write them?,1. List the points that develop the main idea of your essay. 2. Place each supporting point in i

11、ts own paragraph. 3. Develop each supporting point with facts, details, and examples. To connect your supporting paragraphs, you should use transitions. Transitions link your paragraphs together and make your essay easier to read. Use them at the beginning and end of your paragraphs.,The Body,A stro

It summarizes or restates the main idea of the essay. You want to leave the reader with a sense that your essay is
