1、 核心情态动词论文:英语核心情态动词的历时语义演变研究【中文摘要】作为情态表达的重要手段之一,情态动词不论在口语中还是在笔语中都得到了广泛的应用,其作用有目共睹,不可或缺。顾名思义,情态动词表示说话人对有关行为或事物的态度和看法,认为其可能、应该或必要等;不但其本身具有一定的词义,而且能为谓语动词增添情态色彩。尽管一直以来情态动词被归属到助动词的范畴之中,但是学者们普遍认为情态动词是由完全动词或实义动词演变而来,并随着时代的进步和发展,发生了颇为明显的语义转变。著名学者 Coates 和 Palmer 都指出了现代英语情态动词呈现出多义性和模糊性的特征,并强调理解情态动词的关键在于理解其不确定
2、性。基于二位学者对情态动词语义的划分,本文选择英语情态动词这一范畴中的五个核心成员 MAY, CAN, MUST, WILL 和 SHALL 作为研究对象开展历时性研究,旨在弄清楚以下几个问题:其一,每个情态动词的核心语义演变过程是什么?其二,这五个核心情态动词的演变规律有没有什么共性?其三,产生语义演变的动因和机制是什么?在本文的研究中,作者首先将英语的发展史分为了四个历史阶段,并针对每一阶段自建了包含文学、政治、法律、演讲、访谈等各方面内容的语料库,然后进行定性定量的分析:一是使用.【英文摘要】As one of important and effective devices for ex
