Lawrence was the fourth
4、 child of a coal miner and an educated mother. He is not only one of the most controversial English novelists of the twentieth century, but one of the most versatile and productive writers in English literature. He is an author of novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books and letters
5、. His novels Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915) and Women in Love (1920) make him one of the most important English writers of 20th century. Lawrence began his novel writing in his early twenties, many of his novels deal with issues of class, as well as his acute understanding of the relatio
6、nship between men, women and the natural world. Each time when Lawrence published a new novel, from the first one The White Peacock to the last one Lady Chatterleys Lover, it would cause a stir in that contemporary society. This shocked the English literary world like a bomb for “the great frankness
7、 in Lawrences treatment of sexuality” (Black 2). In nearly a hundred years, his Sons and Lovers have drawn heated criticism and commentaries from all corner of the world since their publication. Up to now, numerous criticisms about Lawrence and his Sons and Lovers have been accumulating abroad. In g
8、eneral, Sons and Lovers has been studied from a variety of perspectives, which results in a wide spectrum of judgments. Many critics tend to assert that Lawrence is at his very best in his novel. There are two traditional approaches to Sons and Lovers, one of which focuses on the influence of Freuds
9、 psychological theory, emphasizing particularly Pauls oedipal complex; the second of which is inclined to treat the novel as an autobiography, drawing heavily from Lawrences own experience. Compared with the systematic investigations abroad, the study of Lawrence and Sons and Lovers in China is rela
10、tively limited and still in its infancy, but it has become extremely fruitful since 1980s. Particularly, after 1990s it emerged a gradually deepening and systematic trend. Since its liberalization in China, there have been numerous related studies on this novel. And various approaches have been adop
11、ted in analyzing it: psychoanalysis, feminism, Marxism, to name but a few. For example, Wang Yi (2001) in his “On Oedipus Complex in Sons and Lovers” made a general comment that there is a strong evidence of Freuds Oedipus complex in this novel. There are also some other discussions about the descri
12、ption of nature in this novel, showing readers that Lawrence concentrates on the decay of nature. And, this novels style, structure, symbolic meaning and linguistic features also in the scope of research.
