5、cultured, polite, and refined. They are like laws in that they codify a set of standards for human behavior; yet they are unlike laws in that there is no formal system for punishing misbehavior. They are a kind of norm.Step II. Warm-up Questions:What changes in manners have taken place according to

6、the article?A perfectly able woman no longer has to act helplessly in public, and a man can drop the outdated courtesies.Why dont men have to show outdated courtesies to women now?It is thanks to the womens liberation. Is “my wife” happy with “my custom”? Why?Maybe no, because she said “you did it a

7、gain” when the hostess had gone. It seems that it takes time for women to get used to “my custom”. 24、tent adj. 坚持不懈的insistently adv. 坚持地, 强求地Step V Language pointsOne of the good things for men in womens liberation is that men no longer have to pay women the old-fashioned courtesies.Sentence Paraphrase: Womens liberation has brought about many good things. One of them is that men do not have to do

25、special things to show their politeness to women as in old times. Structural Analysis:该句主干是一个系表结构, “one of the good things is that ”,that 引导表语从句。注意“one of+复数名词”结构中,one 是中心词,故与其相对的动词用单数。又如:One of the team members summarizes their project to the audience.Pay sb. courtesy: be polite to sb.The author of

26、 the article also says there is no reason why a man should walk on the outside of a woman on the sidewalk. Sentence Paraphrase: The author of the article also points out that a man is no longer supposed to walk on the outside of a woman on the sidewalk.该句主干为“The author says”。 宾语从句中主干为“there be”结构, “

27、reason”一词后是其定语从句。 “reason”的定语从句可以用 that 引导,也可以用 why 引导。如:There is a reason why / that you love this movie.If, out of love and respect, he actually wants to take the blows, he should walk on the inside - because thats where attackers are all hiding these days.” Sentence Paraphrase: If he is really wi

28、lling to face the danger because of his love and respect for the woman, he should walk on the inside, because nowadays attackers are always hiding on the inside of the sidewalk.整个句子有三个分句,前两个是条件关系:“if he , he should ”;前两个和第三个之间又是因果关系, “because”引导的原因状语从句中 “that”指“on the inside”。 if 条件句中的插入语“out of”意为“

29、 出于,由于 ”,例如:A lot of people came to the exhibition out of curiosity.take the blows 是一个源于拳击的俚语,又作 take the punches,比喻“ 面对困难或危险,接受挑战”。It is usually easier to follow rules of social behavior than to depend on ones own taste. Sentence Paraphrase: Compared with following social norms, it is more difficul

30、t to do what one really likes to do. 连词 than 连接两个不定式短语,表示两种行为“to follow rules of social behavior”和“to depend on ones own taste”间的比较。注意 than 是并列连词,相比较的部分在语法结构上须一致。Actually, since I had walked through the restaurant ahead of my wife, it would have been awkward, I should think, not to have taken the ch

Sentence Paraphrase: As a matter of fact, I had preceded my wife through the restaurant, so if I had not taken the seat before her, I would have found myself in a very embarrassing situation. 此句为复合句,since 引导原因状语从句。主句中用的是虚拟语气,would have been 表示过去可能发生的事。to have done 是动词不定式的完成式。 “I should think”是主

32、句中的插入语。Step VI Focus on Grammar情态动词(Modal Verbs )的用法e.g. Surely they can get out by themselves at night just as easily.She also says there is no reason why a man should walk on the outside of a woman on the sidewalk.A man should walk where he wants to. So should a woman.But rules may be safely broke

33、n, of course, by those of us with the gift of natural grace.In times like these, there might be tough attackers hidden about.It would not be suitable at all to put a woman in a car and then shut the door on her, leaving her at the mercy of some bad guy who might be hiding in the back seat.在英语中,除了 ca

34、n, may ,should, might, would 外,还有 must , will, need ,ought to 等青苔动词。此外,还有 have to, be supposed to, be able to 等表达情态的方式,如下列各句中的黑体词:e.g. Men no longer have to pay women the old-fashioned courtesies.A perfectly able woman no longer has to act helplessly in public as if she were a model. Today a man is

35、supposed to walk on the outside. 注意:含情态动词的句子在变成否定句时直接在情态动词后加 not.e.g. She doesnt need help getting in and out of cars.此句中,need 是实义动词,而非情态动词。Text B Good MannersStep I. 36、 position. 经验He experienced all sorts of difficulties and hardships.thoughtfulness n. 考虑周到,体谅;慎重Thoughtful adj. 沉思的;体贴的,关心的e.g. It was thoughtful of you to bring flowers.你带花来真是想得太周到了。apply v. 运用,适用;申请e.g. This is a rule that applies to everyone.这是一条适用于每个人的规则。I want to apply for the job.considerable

37、adj. 相当多(或大)的A writer of considerable influence 一名有很大影响的作家annoyance n. 烦恼,讨厌的事annoy v. 使苦恼,骚扰e.g. These flies are annoying me.这些苍蝇真让人讨厌。interrupt v. 打断(正在说话或做事的人) ,中断,插嘴e.g. Rain interrupted our football game.It is rude to interrupt 打断别人是不礼貌的。Step II.
