What makes it magical though is its story and the power dynamics that go on between kings, queens, courtiers, and enemies all of which are very Shakespearean themes.Everything I needed to know about business I could have learned from watching Game of Thrones.Here

10、are the top 10 lessons (fair warning: spoilers below!):1. No one ever forgets a slight. We think if we have treated someone poorly in the past but then give them a promotion to a new position of power that all will be right again. It wont. People have long memories. They never forget a slight. When

11、13 year old Joffrey is embarrassed by Eddard Starks (Lord of Winterfells) daughter, Arya, he grows to despise the Starks. As soon as he rises to power as the King, one of his first acts is to execute Eddard Stark, instead of sparing his life as planned.2. Trust no one. Although there are a few excep

12、tions in the television series, as a basic rule, you cant trust anyone in the Seven Kingdoms and the same is true on Wall Street or in any corporate boardroom today. Old friends who seem to have power like King Robert Baratheon to Eddard Stark can be suddenly killed or removed from power and lose th

13、e ability to offer you protection. Those who you think are your friends can betray you.You must protect yourself, at all costs. If not you, who else will?3. If you have to trust someone, you can only trust family blood. What loyalty exists in Game of Thrones is only between those of the same blood.

14、Even half-blood is not enough. Eddards wife Lady Catelyn Stark cannot stand Eddards bastard son, Jon Snow. In business, most of us dont work with our families. Therefore, you can only trust those whove known you for decades and long before you were famous. Thats why, at the start of the series, King

15、 Robert Baratheon asks Eddard to be his “Hand of the King” after the death of his predecessor Lord Jon Arryn. Its not because Eddard is such a fine Lord of Winterfell that Baratheon wants him to move to the court at Kings Landing. Its because the King remembers when he used to go “drinking and whori

16、ng” with Eddard when they were young soldiers. In business today, we trust the family blood of going to the same high school, the same college, or from working together in your first or second job out of college. When new CEOs appointed like new Kings one of their first acts is sweeping out the old

17、court lieutenants and bring in their comrades who they trust like family blood.4. We over-estimate the power of far-away enemies and under-estimate the power of close enemies. When the series first opens, King Robert Baratheon and his Queen Cersei and her family of the Lannisters worry about the hei

18、rs of the Targaryen family, as they have fairly recently overthrown the “Mad King” who was a Targaryen to seize power. The only male heir, Viserys Targaryen and his sister Daenerys have fled across the sea. Daenerys is betrothed to a Dothraki horse warrior named Khal Drogo, to amass power. Early on,

19、 there is great concern about the potential risk of a Targaryen and Dothraki attack. As the series goes on though, what is interesting is how often those with power overlook the threat from those closest to them in their circle of trust. The same is true in business. Imagine the shock Steve Jobs had

20、 at Apple (AAPL) after inviting former Google (GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt on to his board to share in Apples deep and secretive long-term planning only to then see Schmidt launch a fierce competitor to the iPhone with the Android operating system a couple of years later. Apples threat wasnt from Researc

21、h In Motion (RIMM); it was sitting across the board room table.5. What is your “Wall?” Who do you staff it with? What is on the other side that might devastate your kingdom? One of the major locations in the series is “the Wall,” in the far North of the Seven Kingdoms. Its 700 feet high and 300 mile

22、s long. Its intended to protect the Seven Kingdoms from the threat of the anarchy and potential black magic of the “Others” and “wildings” who are thought to be on the other side of it. In business, we can see a product or service rise to great success. That success brings great wealth and power. It

23、 makes life very comfortable for those inside the court at Kings Landing. The risk to that comfortable and warm court seems remote often, just as few in Kings Landing think about the North, the Wall, or the risk of a coming long winter to threaten them. The “Nights Watch” who sit at the Wall to help

24、 protect the Seven Kingdoms are under-resourced and under-staffed. Those who serve there arent the best and brightest of the Seven Kingdoms because the threat is seen as remote. Research In Motion used to have 50% of the US market share for smart phones just 3 years ago. Their court in Waterloo, Can

25、ada, seemed very secure and powerful. The threat to their empire was seen to be low even after the iPhone was introduced in 2007. Anyone within Research In Motion who warned co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis were ignored. Those who ignore the other side of the Wall, do so at their own peril.6

26、. People unexpectedly die. You must have a contingency plan. Not just in business, but in life, we too often assume that tomorrow will be just like today. Our friends and family will always be there for us. But Game of Thrones shows us starkly that people die every day and they never come back. Deat

27、h is final. When Eddard is beheaded by King Joffrey, it throws his family into disarray and civil war erupts. His daughter Arya flees and disguises herself as a boy. When Eddards friend the King dies, hes similarly exposed with the new power structure that takes over Kings Landing. The best companie

28、s prepare themselves for deaths of key executives and for all sorts of other contingencies that arise. We always think bad things wont happen to us, but life always brings change.7. Dont disregard up-and-coming talent. There is always a current power structure in any court. We are deferential to the

29、 King and Queen today, but we are often not so polite to those without power. A young teen Joffrey is seen as a petulant brat by many. He grows into a tyrannical King. If youd gotten on his bad side early, the chances were high that you remained there. Viserys Targaryen thinks of his young sister Da

30、enerys as a puppet he can manipulate into marrying someone that will get him back in power which he covets after he loses it. He never realizes that she is growing up to be an extremely powerful Queen. His overlooking her influence eventually leads to his death by her husband.8. Never under-estimate

31、 the power behind the throne. Just as we under-estimate youth, Game of Thrones also show how Queens are consistently under-estimated. Ive just mentioned the maturation of Daenerys into “The Mother of Dragons” from a scared and quiet 13 year old girl. Theres also Queen Cersei, the wife of King Robert

32、 Baratheon. Shes carrying on an incestual relationship with her twin brother and positions their son, Joffrey, to be the heir to Baratheons throne. Cersei is exquisitely good at manipulating everyone around her to get what she wants and keep hold of power. And there are Cerseis in business all the t

33、ime. It can be the trusted confidant of the CEO pushing him or her to undertake some course of action to serve that “Queens” agenda. One must always be aware of the power dynamics around a particular “King” you are dealing with at your company or another.9. Raw emotion will get you killed. You must

34、always plan and prepare if you want to survive. Headstrong boys are consistently executed throughout Game of Thrones. If you shoot your mouth off without thinking, youll typically pay the ultimate price. Those who survive the longest and cling to power are those who are thoughtful, and cunningly don

35、t telegraph their future actions. Its much better to be overlooked than to draw attention to yourself.10. Remember where the title “Game of Thrones” comes from. In the original book for “A Game of Thrones” by George Martin on which the TV series is based, Queen Cersei Lannister speaks a line from which the title comes:“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”Remember that, and you will be well prepared to succeed in equally bloody sport of modern-day business.
