、 where my home was.,In-depth Reading,3 As years passed, however, I continued to visit my grandmother every summer in that very same Polish village. I was not entirely sure what compelled me to return year after year. But I have realized now that I kept coming back because, consciously or not, I knew

、 there was a certain truth in those words that my grandmother uttered to me on that warm summer evening.,4 My Polish culture has always been a huge part of my life. My parents immigrated to the United States in 1994, only two years before I was born. Because their English vocabulary at that time was

、 relatively limited, I grew up speaking only the Polish language. Any English words I may have picked up were all thanks to the efforts of Barney, the happiest dinosaur on television. Unfortunately, despite having committed all of Barneys catchy songs to memory, my language barrier became evident on

I couldnt understand why none of my classmates ate gofry (Polish for “waffles”) for breakfast, or why they all stared blankly at me whenever I suggested we play zabawa w chowanego (hide-and-seek) during recess. However, while my weekdays were marked by such challenges,

、 my weekends were an entirely different experience. Every Saturday morning, I eagerly skipped along to the Henryk Sienkiewicz Polish School in Brooklyn.,In-depth Reading,5 It didnt bother me that I had to go to school six days a week instead of five, for I valued the time spent among my Polish teach

、ers and classmates. It comforted me that my teachers knew what I meant when I asked to go to the ubikacja (bathroom), and that my classmates were always willing to share their kanapki (sandwich) with me when I forgot my lunch at home. It was here that I acquired friendships which I cherish to this d

For their continued efforts, I could not be more thankful.,In-depth Reading,8 Although Polish is no longer my primary language, it will always remain my primary nationality. It manifests itself within every aspect of my daily life, from the customary foods to

、 the traditional music. My Polish heritage has shaped me into the person that I am today and has taught me values of family and community that will remain with me throughout my entire life.,In-depth Reading,记住家之所在 1 “不论你在世界上的什么地方,不论生活可能会带你去往何处,要记住:你的家将永远在这里”。

,In-depth Reading,Part 1 ( 1 3) is the start of the whole story.
