So the first two

Teaching new words and structures (教新词和结构)Guessing words from context:1) There are two main sets of Games - the Winter and Summer Olympics, and both are held every four years on a regular basis. Are h

4、eld is present simple passive voice and “on a regular basis” means the same as “regularly”.2) Only athletes who have reached the agreed standard for their event will be admitted as competitors. The word “admitted” means “allowed” in here. Will be admitted is future passive voice.3) Does anyone want

5、to host the Olympic Games? It is clear here that the word “host” is being used as a verb but has a similar meaning to the noun “host” a person who gives a party, dinner, etc and pays for it. In the same way the country which organizes the Olympic Games also pays for the stadiums, accommodation, etc.

6、4) No other country could join in, nor could slaves or women! Notice the inversion used in the sentence.5) Theres as competition among countries to host the Olympics as to win Olympic medals. There is a kind of comparison in this sentence.2. Understanding ideas (理解大意)The interview between Li Yan and

7、 Pausanias makes sure the students are aware of the similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympic Games. Ask them questions like:1 What does Li Yan tell Pausanias about the modern Olympic Games?2 What is the first difference he notices between the ancient and modern Olympics?3

8、What is the second thing?4 What is the third thing, etc?5 Can you describe the modern Olympic Games briefly?6 Can you describe the ancient Olympic Games briefly?3. Discussion of style (讨论文体)This reading passage gives the students an opportunity to examine an interview. They will see that one of the

9、two in the dialogue asks the questions and the other answers them. Pausanias also interrupts Li Yan and the questions develop from her answers.
