It is a typical ancient canal town in the region of the Yangtze Delta, featuring flowing rivers, old bridges, narrow cobbled street

2、s, Ming and Qing style buildings as well as its folk culture. An introduction of Zhujiajiao may include the location, the architectural layout and its folk life.,01) Brief Introduction,Located in a suburb of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao is a well-preserved canal town on the shore of Dianshan Lake, Qingpu Di

3、strict. It has a large number of ancient bridges, Ming and Qing Dynasty cobbled alleys, and residential houses with white walls and black tiles. It has been awarded as Historical Cultural Town in Shanghai.,01) Brief Introduction,Zhujiajiao is also called Zhujie Ge, meaning Pearl Street, or Zhuxi, me

4、aning Pearl Stream(珠溪). It has been identified that human activities could be traced back to 5,000 years ago in Zhujiajiao and a settlement here was formed during the Three Kingdoms Period 1,700 years ago. Zhujiajiao became a bustling commercial center in the Song and Yuan Dynasties and a hub in the

5、 Ming and Qing Dynasties. Rows upon rows of 成排成排的stores, firms, wine-shops and teahouses were erected with huge crowds of peddlers and vendors pouring into its streets and hundreds of ships swarming its wharves.,01) Brief Introduction,Zhujiajiao has long been known as the Venice of Shanghai, with th

6、e whole town in a network of waterways. Rivers, canals and bridges of different kinds scatter over散布在各处 the town. Wharves are numerous and small boats are the main transport in the town. Old bridges span the rivers and connect the whole ancient town. Even to date, there are still 36 old bridges in d

7、ifferent shapes and styles and of materials from wood to stone and to marble. On the south bank are the residential quarters while on the north is the main shopping area.

The ancient town is thoroughly connected by distinc

13、tive and old bridges built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Taking a boat ride, you will have the chance to appreciate three bridges of different styles: Taian Bridge, Huimin Bridge and Pingan Bridge. It is said that a visit to Zhujiajiao without seeing the bridges means that you have not really

14、been to Zhujiajiao at all.,02) Hightlights: Bridges,Of the ancient bridges, the standout must be the graceful five-arch Fangsheng Bridge, meaning a bridge where fish are set free释放/使获得自由. It is the longest, largest and tallest stone bridge in Shanghai, which is 72 meters long, 5.8meters wide, and 7.

15、4 meters tall. It was built in 1571 with the fund raised by a monk僧侣/修道士/和尚 in the local Cimen Temple. The bridge looks like a long strip of jade belt玉腰带 while its arches resemble the rainbow. Buddhists used to set the fish or turtles free at this bridge. In order to get blessed, visitors nowadays b

16、uy fish or turtles from hawkershks叫卖小贩/饲鹰者 and set them free.,02) Hightlights: Bridges,The Taian Bridge was built in 1584, which connects the shopping street and the Buddhist temple. It is a single arch bridge of gray stones, but it is as high as two-story houses, so you seem to be walking on the ro

17、of of the houses when crossing the bridge. If you stand at the foot of the this bridge watching pedestrians coming over from the other side, you would have peculiar view that they show up slowly and gradually from head to feet.The Huimin Bridge is the only wooden bridge in this town. It is also call

18、ed Lang Bridge朗桥, meaning a veranda bridge, because it has a roof over the bridge. The pedestrians have found it quite convenient to go up and down the bridge without worrying about the rain or the hot sun. Thus it is a named Huimin Bridge in Chinese, meaning benefiting people.,02) Hightlights: Brid

19、ges,The Pingan Bridge was also named the Qis Bridge, for it is said that the troops of General Qi JiGuang, an anti-Jananese hero of Ming Dynasty, once marched on the bridge. The body and foundation of the bridge were made of grantie, the railing pillars were made of gray bricks, and the hand rails w

20、ere of cypress logs. Among all the logs, there are still three original ones on the bridges. Because of the unevenness of the bridge surface, the bridge creaks when people are walking on it.,04) Hightlights: Kezhi Garden,Kezhi Garden, literally Studying and Farming Garden, is the largest manorial ga

21、rden in the town. Located in Xijin Street in the northern part of the town, kezhi Garden is a scenic retreat. The architecture in the garden is a combination of the traditional Chinese and the Western styles. It is locally named as “ Garden of the Mas Family” after a former owner, Ma Wenqing. Ke is

22、Chinese means “study” and Zhi “farming”, inplying that people should study and farm to keep the house. With this in mind, Ma had both a Book CIty for study and a Daoxiang Vilage for farming built in the garden. The construction started in 1912 and lasted for 15 years, costing the owner 300,000 taels

23、 of silver.,04) Hightlights: Kezhi Garden,The whole garden consists mainly of a hall area, a rockery area and a garden area. The four guest halls are for receiving guests of different social status and having different relationships with the Mas family. The very last one is definitely used for meeti

24、ng their distinguished guests and bosom friends. In this section, you would find the Book City, where the owner studied.,04) Hightlights: Kezhi Garden,In the rockery area, you would find toruous rockeries laid out with the lathy, pierced and translucent Taihu rocks. On its south is a five-story buil

25、ding with a Wangyue Pavilion, which means Moon Viewing Pavilion, on top. It is the tallest building in the town. In this section you would also discover a theatrical stage and other recreational facilities. In the section of gardens or Daoxiang Village, there are all kinds of fruit trees like peach,

26、 plum, apricot, and loquat and various ancient trees.
