,Listening,1642 17

、VELOPMENT OF IDEAS ON GRAITYIsaac Newton was the first person to put forward a theory about gravity. He lived from 1642 to 1727 in England. At this time people were becoming very interested in science. There is a story, that one day Isaac Newton was sitting under a tree when he saw an apple fall. Thi

、s made him think. He realized that everything on the earth fell back to the earth if it was dropped or thrown away. This gave him his most famous idea. He suggested that, everything falls back to the earth because of a pull he called gravity. Newtons idea about gravity lasted for a very long time. It

、 was not until 1905 that anybody suggested his idea was not correct. Albert Einstein, who lived from 1879 to 1955, suggested in,1905 that gravity was different in space. This meant that it was not the same everywhere. For example, the gravity of the moon is weaker than that of the earth because the

、moon is smaller. Also when a rocket or spaceship is in space there would be no gravity at all.,Einstein also suggested that time is not the same everywhere. It depends on the speed which a planet takes when turning. For example, on the earth we measure time in days and years. But in space, time can

、be different. A planet that turns round more slowly would, have a longer day and one that turns more quickly would have a shorter day. So on one planet time would go more slowly and on another planet time would go more quickly than it does on the earth. Many scientists have used Einsteins ideas to ma

、ke new ideas, about space. One of the most famous modern astronomers is Stephen Hawking, who was born in 1942. He has used Einsteins ideas to make ideas about strange things called “black holes”. People used to think that a star going near a “black hole” would be pulled into it forever. But Stephen,H

、awking has shown that black holes may also push stars out into space. He has been very ill for many years. He is unable to move or speak without a computer. But his mind remains as strong as ever and he still teaches at the university of Cambridge in England. He is an inspiration to us all.,Which is

、 the best for giving the main idea of the listening.,1. I heard about how three men made mistakes when they tried to describe gravity. The three men did not really make mistakes in trying to,Partly true.,explain how gravity works in space. The fact that other scientists found they had “made mistakes”

、 meant that ideas about space were becoming more accurate.2. I heard about how three men wanted to find out about the beginning of the universe.,The three scientists wanted to explain how the universe worked and not how it began.3. I heard about how the idea of gravity has developed over a long peri

、od of time. The best one.,Not true.,4. I heard about three scientists and their work. This is too general and does not give enough detail about what the listening passage is about.,Listening on P62,杨利伟,男,汉族,辽宁绥中县人,中共党员,大学文化。1965年6月出生,1983年6月入伍,1988年9月入党,现为中国人民解放军航天员大队三级航天员,正团职,中校军衔,1992年、1994年两次荣立三等功。

、,1. Whos Yang Liwei?Hes our hero who traveled into space on October15, 2003.2. Whats the name of the spaceship?Shenzhou V.3. Do you know what education and experience you need to become an astronaut? No.,True or False,1. Yang Liwei became an astronaut by chance.2. Nobody over 170cm can be an astronau

、t.3. Yang Liwei trained for 10 years to become a pilot.,F,F,T,4. If Yang Liwei had problems in space, there were ways to save him.5. China is the third country to send people into space just like Russia and the USA.6. Yang Liwei thinks he was lucky to be Chinas first man in space.,T,T,T,Excellent de

He travelled for fourteen hours on October 15, 2003 and circled the earth twenty-one times. Mr Renault, a famous reporter, is interviewi

、ng him,R = Mr Renault Y = Yang Liwei,R: Thank you so much, Mr Yang for coming today to talk to us about your experiences in space.Y: Not at all. Im happy to be here.,on a popular television programme Mysteries in space.,R: Please can you tell us what was your most exciting moment?Y: Well, that was w

、hen the spaceship began to lift off the ground. Then I knew I was really on my way and China was the third country to send people into space.R: Didnt you feel afraid at all?,Y: No, because Id been trained not to worry. So I watched all my instruments and stayed calm.R: Was there anything that surpri

、sed you?Y: The beauty of space. Id never realized how lovely the earth looks till I was going round it.,R: Now we know that you are 38 years old, that you have an excellent degree, you want to be successful and youve trained for 10 years to become an astronaut. But what made you want to go into spac

、e?,Y: Well, of course it was one of my dreams to fly in space. I was a pilot for the air force of the PLA. So when they offered me this chance I was glad to take it.R: Where did you train?,Y: At a special place in the Gobi Desert called “Space City”. Of course you have to be fit but Im also lucky to

、 be short and light so I was considered to be right for an astronaut. It was a wonderful chance but I had to work very hard.,R: How tall and heavy are you?Y: Im a little shorter than 170cm and less than 70kgs.R: Was it safe in your space rocket?Y: Yes. It was fitted with a special seat to throw me o

、ut of the space rocket if things went wrong as,it lifted off. There are also a special door for another space rocket to rescue me if there were problems in space.R: They seem to have thought of everything. Thank you for taking your time.Y: A pleasure.,Listening task,Why did Li Yanping have his first

、 space walk?A. To collect data for his research on gravity.B. To test the functions of the new spacesuit.C. To make the Hubble telescope work again.,C,oxygen can,Gravity boots,Water system,Right engine,Tool kit,Left engine,Listening text,W = Wallis L = Li Yanping,W: Mr Li Yanping, would you please t

、ell us about your first space walk? L: Yes. I would be very happy to do so. We repaired the Hubble telescope.,W: Really? What did you have to do?L: It will probably seem very simple to you. We had to clean it.W: So how did you get ready for the walk from the spaceship?L: First we had to get into our

、 spacesuits. They are very thick, and carry all the oxygen we will need to breathe. It also has hot and cold water so the suit can warm us if it is too cold or cool us if it is too hot in space. It is very heavy.W: Is it dangerous to leave the spaceship?,L: Yes, indeed. When we leave, we go into a sm

、all room. We have to wear our gravity boots so we can walk there. We close the door behind us and then we can open the door to space. Then our gravity boots stop working and we can fly out of the door.,W: How do you get about in space?L: We use small engines to move around. To go left we push the le

、ft engine and to go right we push the right one. We have to go very slowly because we dont weigh anything in space. We can fly around like feathers.,W: What does it feel like in space?L: Very strange. We have no weight because there is no gravity, so doing any little job is very tiring. We had to pr

、actice moving and working a lot before we were allowed outside the spaceship.,W: What happens if you fly too far from the spaceship?L: You would never be able to get back to it so we tie ourselves to the spaceship with a special rope.W: What did you use to repair the Hubble telescope?,L: We used som

、e special tools that were tied round our waists. That way we didnt lose them as they might fly away in space too. We did a good job. The telescope works fine now.W: Thank you very much, Mr Li.,Homework,After class, you should listen to them again and sum up what you have learnt from them. For the homework, think about one question: What needs to be an astronaut?,
