The SL word-order is preserved and the words translated singly by their most common meaning, out of conte

6、xt. Cultural words are translated literally. The main use of a word-for-word translation is either to understand the mechanics of the source language or to construe a difficult text as a pre-translation process. Literal translation The SL grammatical constructions are converted to their nearest TL e

7、quivalents but the lexical words are again translated singly, out of context. As a pre-translation process, this indicates the problems to be solved.,Faithful translation A faithful translation attempts to reproduce the precise contextual meaning of the original within the constraints of the TL gram

8、matical structures. It transfers cultural words and preserves the degree of grammatical and lexical abnormality (deviation from SL norms) in the translation. It attempts to be completely faithful to the intentions and the text-realization of the SL writer. Semantic translation Semantic translation d

9、iffers from faithful translation only in as far as it must take more account of the aesthetic value (that is, the beautiful and natural sound) of the SL text, compromising on meaning where appropriate so that no assonance, word-play or repetition jars in the finished version. Further, it may transla

10、te less important cultural words by culturally neutral third or functional terms but not by cultural equivalent and it may make other small concessions to the readership. The distinction between faithful and semantic translation is that the first is uncompromising and dogmatic, while the second is m

11、ore flexible, admits the creative exception to 100% fidelity and allows for the translators intuitive empathy with the original.,Adaptation This is the freeest form of translation. It is used mainly for plays (comedies) and poetry; the themes, characters, plots are usually preserved, the SL culture

12、converted to the TL culture and the text rewritten. The deplorable practice of having a play or poem literally translated and then rewritten by an established dramatist or poet has produced many poor adaptations, but other adaptations have rescued period plays. Free translation Free translation repr

13、oduces the matter without the manner, or the content without the form of the original. Usually it is a paraphrase much longer than the original so-called intralingual translation, often prolix and pretentious, and not translation at all.,Idiomatic translation Idiomatic translation reproduces the mes

14、sage of the original but tends to distort nuances of meaning by preferring colloquialisms and idioms where these do not exist in the original. (Authorities as diverse as Seleskovitch and Stuart Gilbert tend to this form of lively, natural translation.) Communicative translation Communicative transla

15、tion attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership.,The apparent triumph of the consumer is, I think, illusory. The conflict of loyalties, the gap between emphasis on source and

16、 target language will always remain as the overriding problem in translation theory and practice. (Newmark: 1981: 38). The purpose of the change in this period is to narrow down the gap between SL and TL orientation by moving down one level towards the converging tip of the V diagram.,In 1981, Newma

17、rks definition of S-T:S-T = to render, as closely as the semantic and syntactic structures of the second language allow, the exact contextual meaning of the original. In 1988, he gave the above definition to faithful translation and added one more element to S-T:S-T =the contextual meaning and aesth

18、etic value of the original in TLs meaning and structure In 1981, Newmark defined C-T as:C-T = to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original In 1988, he gave up effect and redefined C-T as:C-T = to render the exact contextual meaning of the o

23、tance, provided there is identity of purpose between author and translator, as well as a similar type of readership. (S-T) The purpose is try to eliminate the division between the three language functions.,3 Distinction between Nida and Newmark,Criticism: their propositions are same.This description

24、 of C-T resembles Nidas dynamic equivalence in the effect it is trying to create on the TT reader, while S-T has similarities to Nidas formal equivalence (Mundy, 2001: 44).,Newmarks dissatisfaction with Nidas theory,4 types of texts for which the effect cannot be realized: (1) non-literary text with

25、 language peculiarity; (2) non-literary text relating to the peculiarity of a culture; (3) artistic work with a strong local flavor; (4) artistic work for self-relief (Newmark: 1981:10-12).,Newmarks translating methods are language function-oriented whereas Nidas are reader-centered. For Newmark, di

26、fferent ST types require corresponding translation methods, with one-to-one relationship between ST and TT. For Nida, a same ST is addressed to different readerships and consequently has different TL versions. The gap between S-T and C-T is narrower than that between F-E and D-E.,While Nida treats m

27、eaning and form separately, Newmark regards them as an integral whole. While Nida makes it clearly that to preserve the content of the message the form must be changed.(Nida, 1969:5), Newmark always emphasizes in his translation method the semantic and syntactic structures of the second language all
