10、A smart-phone is a remarkable device because it can do so many things. Once you have a user interface, a processor and a wireless connection, a smart-phone brings the world to your fingertips. With the PHONE 5, Apple has released the sixth version of the IPHONE, and over the years, the company has c
11、ontinuously improved on each of these factors: The original IPHONE revolutionized the mobile phone by using a capacitive touch screen as the principal user input device. This also allowed the size of the display, as the principal output device, to be maximized. Over the years, the display has improv
12、ed in resolution (the Retina Display) and the new IPHONE 5 also increases the size of the display slightly. A smart-phones processor significantly determines the quality of the user experience. The original IPHONE used an off-the-shelf processor from Samsung, but since the IPHONE 4, Apple has relied
13、 on its own proprietary processors. These are fabbed by Samsung and are based on ARM cores, but are increasingly modified with architectures designed by Apple or obtained from start-ups through acquisitions. In direct support of the processor, the amount of DRAM memory has also increased. The utilit

An improved camera provides better photos, but can also b

The foundation of all these functions and usages is Apples iOS operating system, and the content ecosystem provided by iTunes and the App Store. These have also been significantly improved over the past five years, and it should
20、 not be underestimated how critical this ecosystem is to the success of the IPHONE. IPHONE 5 OVER-COVER UNDER-WHELMING As was pointed out earlier, the IPHONE 5 does not look radically different from the previous IPHONE 4S. It remains a flat slab with the exact same width, but elongated by just 8.6mm
21、, so as to allow for a larger display. The front side continues to be a continuous panel of glass, but the backside glass has been replaced by an aluminum shell. Apparently, Apple was looking for a design refresh, and also wanted to address issues with glass breakage.Also of note is the reduction in
22、 thickness and weight. Compared to many other smart-phones, which mostly have 4.3“ displays but sometimes top 5“ in display size, the IPHONE 5 continues to have a smallish display. The advantage of the smaller size is that the average person can still reach all areas of
27、the display with the fingers of one hand; larger display sizes often require a two-handed operation. The display technology has also changed, which accounted for much (0.9mm out of 1.7mm) of the thickness reduction of the IPHONE 5. In all previous versions of the IPHONE, the LCD panel was stacked be
28、hind a glass-based capacitive touch panel, which in turn was stacked behind the glass cover that the user actually touches. Each part was manufactured by different companies, and then assembled. With some variations (for example flex-based touch panels), this out-cell construction is used by almost
29、all smart-phones. The IPHONE 5, on the other hand, has adopted an in-cell touch panel construction, whereby the capacitive touch panel function is integrated in the LCD display sandwich itself. While there is still a separate glass cover (for mechanical protection), this approach has reduced the dis
30、play/touch panel construction in thickness and weight, and eliminated a supply chain level. It should be pointed out, that this approach complicates the LCD display fabrication itself, and currently yield loss is constraining the supply chain. Starting with the IPHONE 4, Apple began to design its own application processors, and have them fabbed by Samsung. The IPHONE 4, for example, used the Apple A4 processor based on
48、 an ARM Cortex A8 core. ARM is a British design firm on whose cores almost all applications processors are based because they offer high performance at very low power consumption. Compared to most other suppliers of applications processors, which mostly follow ARMs roadmap of increasing performances

Apple acquired relevant design talent and patents from its acquisitions of PA Semi in 2008 and Intrinsity in 2010, and also hired various other chip designers since then.
