Knowledge ImprovementWang Xizhi was a famous calligrapher, traditionally referred to as the Sage of Calligraphy , who lived during the Jin Dynasty (265420). He is considered by many to be one of the most esteemed Chinese calligraphers of all time, especially

12、during and after the Tang Dynasty, and a master of all forms of Chinese calligraphy, especially the running script.Born in Linyi, Shandong, Wang spent most of his life in present-day Shaoxing, Zhejiang. He learned the art of calligraphy from Lady Wei Shuo. He excelled in every script but particularl

13、y in semi-cursive script. His most famous work is the Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion, the introduction to a collection of poems written by a number of poets during a gathering at Lanting near the town of Shaoxing for the Spring Purification Festival. The original is lost, but t

The earliest paintings were not representational but ornamental; they consisted of patterns or designs rather than pictures. Early pottery was painted with spirals, zigzags, dots, or animals. Try to compare and explain some characteristics of them and then make a brief introduction.Knowledge linksThe Oldest known paintings in the world The oldest known paintings are at the Grotte Chauvet in France, claimed by some historians to be about 32,000 years old. They a

33、re engraved and painted using red ochre and black pigment and show horses, rhinoceros, lions, buffalo, mammoth or humans often hunting. However the earliest evidence of painting has been discovered in two rock-shelters in Arnhem Land, in northern Australia. In the lowest layer of material at these s

34、ites there are used pieces of ochre estimated to be 60,000 years old. Archaeologists have also found a fragment of rock painting preserved in a limestone rock-shelter in the Kimberley region of North-Western Australia, that is dated 40 000 years old. There are examples of cave paintings all over the

35、 worldin France, Spain, Portugal, China, Australia, India etc.In Western cultures oil painting and watercolor painting have rich and complex in style and subject matter. In the East, ink and color ink historically predominated the choice of media with equally rich and complex traditions. Four treasu

36、res of the study Writing Brush The earliest writing brush that has been found is a relic of the Warring States Period (476 BC 221 BC ). From that time onwards, the brush has evolved into many forms. It is important to see that there can be both soft and hard brushes each producing their own particul

37、ar styles. The delicacy gives literators and painters inspiration for creation, and has led to brush shafts being decorated with artistic patterns. Ink Stick A good ink stick should be ground so as to be refined black with luster. With the invention of paper, they were improved accordingly. Since th

38、e Han dynasty ( 206 BC-220), ink sticks have been made from pine soot, using other procedures that include mixing with glue, steaming and molding. In ancient times, emperors such Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) had paid great attention to the production of ink stickes and were expert in the

39、ir appreciation of quality inks. PaperPaper making is among the “four great inventions” and one of the great contribuions that ancient Chinese people made to the world. Before the existence of paper, our ancestors utilized knots in cords to record events. They then carved on bone, ivory, tortoise sh

40、ell and bronzes. For very many years they wrote on pieces of bamboom. It was Cai Lun who made the valuable contribution and his research gave rise to paper. Afterwards, many varieties of paper were produced of different quality and usage. Today the Xuan paper originally made in Anhui Province still

41、shines with its charm. Ink Slab The ink slab is the reputed head of the four treasures, for its sobriety and elegance has endured the passage of time. Through ink slabs, people can sample the artistic charm of sculpting and the ink stones natural tints. Nearly all Chinese calligraphy enthusiasts hol

42、d that the star of ink slab is the Duanyan, ink slab produced in Duanzhou of Guangdong Province. It has its base a purple hue and enjoys the poetic name purple clouds. It was always a tribute to the royal families during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907). Performers and roles in Beijing Opera: Sheng: The

43、 Sheng (生) is the main male role in Beijing opera. This role has numerous subtypes. The laosheng is a dignified older role. These characters have a gentle and cultivated disposition and wear sensible costumes. Young male characters are known as xiaosheng. Dan :The Dan (旦) refers to any female role i

44、n Beijing opera. Dan roles were originally divided into five subtypes. Old women were played by laodan, martial women were wudan, young female warriors were daomadan, virtuous and elite women were qingyi, and vivacious and unmarried women were huadan. Jing:The Jing (净) is a painted face male role. D

45、epending on the repertoire of the particular troupe, he will play either primary or secondary roles. This type of role will entail a forceful character, so a Jing must have a strong voice and be able to exaggerate gestures. Chou: The Chou (丑) is a male clown role. The Chou usually plays secondary ro

46、les in a troupe. Indeed, most studies of Beijing opera classify the Chou as a minor role. The name of the role is a homophone of the Mandarin Chinese word chou, meaning “ugly“. This reflects the traditional belief that the clowns combination of ugliness and laughter could drive away evil spirits. Ch
