14、are cut down for timber, or cleared for hydro-electric dam projects and mining. Once developers have built roads into the forests, settlers move in to clear more areas for farmland. The ash fertilizes the soil, but the goodness lasts only a couple of seasons before the farmers have to move on. When the forest is cleared it leaves the fragile soil unprotected. Its nutrients are quickly eroded by wind, and heavy rain washes(leaches)them away.,
