1、Review of the Movie Gua ShaI. Summary of the movieThe story happened in a immigrant family in America. Da tong and his wife Jenny immigrated into the States and had their baby-Denis there. In order to take a good care of Da tongs father, they decided to live with him. The resource of the story was t
2、hat the grandfather had a traditional Chinese therapy to Denis. However, the American doctor thought that Denis was suffered an extremely serious violence from his parents. So they looked for the lawyer and tried to protect Denis by sending him to the childrens shelter. When in the court, no matter
3、how many words Da Tong explained to the judge, he couldnt believe that Denis was just received a therapy and he couldnt understand what Da tong has explained to him about the traditional therapy. Finally, Deniss boss also his friend, went to China to acquire the knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medi
4、cine. After a short time in China learning the basic of TCM, he went back to America and showed the court what he saw and learnt about TCM in China. However, what he had done did not helped Da tong won the lawsuit. Da tong divorced his wife and was punished by the court that he could not see his son
5、 and went into their house without permission. Being suffering from a tough time missing his beautiful wife and beloved son, Da tong decided to give them a surprise on the Christmas. He dressed up at as Santa, and climbed into the house and finally the family reunited again.Actually this is a typica
6、l movie talking about the cross-cultural communication. Meanwhile, it also mentioned the parental love, romantic love and friendship. All this are of great importance in our daily life. But in my opinion, the cross-cultural communication is the representative aspect that we should pay much more atte

Definition of cross-cultural communication“Cross-cultural communication (also frequently referred to as intercultural communication, which is also used in a difference sense, though ) is a field of study that looks at how people from differing cultural backgrounds communicate, in simil
8、ar and different ways among themselves, and how they endeavor to communicate cross-cultures.”-WikipediaFrom the definition we can have a clear sense that different cultural backgrounds is the main reason leading to the difficulty in cross-cultural communication. As we can see in the film Gua Sha, be
9、cause of the huge between Chinese and American culture, its hard for people from the 2 countries come to a consensus in almost every aspects, especially in accepting Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). After watching the movie, I had a deep thought about the cross-culture, and I wrote this paper to
10、illustrate some cross-cultural problems existed in spreading TCM to the world, and also give some solutions on solving these problems.III. Barriers of spreading TCMIn this part, Id like to state the barriers of spreading Traditional Chinese Medicine. From my research on the internet and according to
11、 my own experience, I think the barriers can be divided into 2 aspects: Inner barriers and External barriers. i. Inner barriersWe often feel impossible that why the foreigners cannot accept our traditional culture. TCM is amazing. The fact is, not only the foreigners but also some Chinese could not
12、accept TCM. So, one of the barriers on the way in spreading TCM is the insufficiency of publicity of TCM and the policy of the government. Then, the scarcity of the TCM talents is another problem. Because TCM is a complicated medicine system having its own philosophy idea, its hard for people to ful
13、ly understand with it. Next, the inconvenient of taking the TCM also lead to the barriers. Whats more, to be practical, the payment of those TCM doctors is on a lower level, so fewer people like to go in for it. ii. External barriersBecause the westerns already possess a complete and effective syste
14、m of western medicine, therefore its difficult for them to accept TCM as a way of treating diseases. Another extremely serious problem is the language barriers. TCM is the splendid culture originated from China, so theres no doubt that Chinese has highly systematic professional expressions of TCM. W
15、hile in the western countries (as most oriental countries accept the theory of TCM), they do not have such an comprehensive language of TCM, thus it would not be easy for them to understand the theory.IV. Solutions It seems to be the most exciting news that, recently, not only Chinese but also more
16、and more foreigners were attracted by TCM. For the whole nation, it will be an unprecedentedly superexcellent opportunity to disseminate the traditional culture and to build up increasing communication with the external world. Here are some of the solutions may be helpful: i. Accepting the TCM Theor
17、y If we want to spread TCM to the world, the very first thing we should do is to accept it. Only when we Chinese can accept our own traditional culture, can we spread it to the whole world.ii. Acquiring basic Traditional Chinese Medicine TheoryAfter having a positive attitude toward TCM, we must pos
18、sess a basic knowledge of TCM. We need to totally trust our own medicine system but not to destroy it by abusive and unsachlich words. Try to learn some basis theory may be an effective way to successfully carry forward TCM.iii. Using proper translationApparently, language plays a very vital role in
19、 disseminating TCM. However, its usually hard for the translators or interpreters to find a proper way to express the TCM terms. So its our duty to dig out a better way and proper methods to translate TCM into other languages.iv. Develop integrated talents Before English became so popular, a phenome
20、non in the society is that those who have a profound knowledge of TCM cannot speak English well and on the contrary, those who speak English well know nearly nothing about TCM. Based on this, to develop talents with both skillful language and profound knowledge of TCM will be the critical task for t
21、he education. V. ConclusionAs an English major studying in a Traditional Chinese Medicine college, I gradually find my advantages compared with the merely language learners and the TCM learners. Its also a great chance for me to acquire the knowledge of introducing TCM to the world as well. Whats mo
22、re, through the learning of western cultures and customs, I can have basic ideas of the westerners logic of thinking and ways of speaking. Therefore, it will be helpful to communicate with them and to introduce TCM to them. As we all know, TCM is the most splendid treasure of Chinese, it is absolute
23、ly our compelling obligation to make it better known by the rest of the world. Back to the movie Gua Sha, it is noticeable that making TCM accepted by nearly all the people is still a long way to go. It is our duty to spare no efforts on trying hard to reduce the barriers on the way of cross-cultura
24、l communication. In this way, we must try every means to complete ourselves, not only on trying hard to be a skillful language speaker but also an excellent cultural disseminating envoy. By doing all of these, we can make a great contribution to the career of TCM, the promotion of cross-cultural communication and the prosperity of our country. (1250 words)
